Ah. This is my first pokémon game since... gold/silver? I was wondering about this info concerning "EVs", and how to effectively use them to train pokémon.

wow, you're just like i was, i haven't owned a pokemon game before diamond since crystal, you'll be surprised at how mathmatical training pokemon is
