The enormous amount of chakra he needs to use to keep the armor in place. Unlike the shifting sands of clouds, the sand armor can be broken.

Deidara's bombs seemed really effective againsts gaara's sheilds. So when link destorys the armor with bombchu's or bomb arrows, and it rebuilds on him, thats a shitload of chakra wasted on nothing. Plus, chakra needed to make his 'special defense' sand go offensive. this would also mean that the sand defending him is nothing but mere sand he cannot make dense or anything.

Read my earlier rofl post about the bombs and the sheild isn't actually used until Gaara is hit . He could never get hit by someone so slow.
