A game I never see mentioned, Lux-Pain. It's got a jrpg art style but isn't really an rpg persay. You scratch into peoples' minds on the touch screen to eliminate these parasite things.

The translation is pretty bad imo but if you can ignore that, it's a pretty good game! If you enjoy VNs, give this one a shot!

Time Hollow
If you like Harvest moon then you can try Rune Factory
For Srpg I'd say Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor or Luminous Arc, Valkyrie Profile Covenant of the Plume is also nice

I've also seen many people praise 999: 9 people, 9 persons, 9 doors, Golden Sun Dark dawn and Avalon Code.
Depends on your tastes, but here are my very solid recommendations:

Kirby Superstar Ultra - Best Kirby game period and one of my favorite games

Chrono Trigger - Very good old school RPG and another of my favorites

World Ends With You - Very Japanese RPG with more action based combat

Devil Survivor 1 and 2 - Turn based plus Strategy RPG with excellent stories

Radiant Historia - New RPG made like an old school one

Avalon Code - Cutesy action RPG with an interesting twist

Dragon Quest IX - Fantastic RPG

Ace Attorney Series - If you're into solving mysteries you need to play this. Like now.

999 (9 Hours, 9 Persons 9 Doors) - If you like puzzles/mystery games that are a little dark, you'll love this game

Rhythm Heaven - Fantastic Rhythm based game. Little bit hard if you're not rhythmically inclined.

Elite Beat Agents - Probably the best rhythm game I've ever played in my life.

Scribblenauts/Super Scribblenauts - Fun platforming you can spend hours just messing around in free play mode with.

Castlevania (Any) - Dawn of Sorrow is probably my favorite, but all on the DS are solid.

And obvious games you should know about like Zelda, Mario Kart, and Pokemon which are all great.

Then some runner-up games I can kinda recommend: Trauma Center, Meteos, Contact, Luminous Ac, Rune Factory, and Final Fantasy Tactics 2.

There is no "Final Fantasy Tactics 2". The game you are attempting to refer to is called Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift.

I can't believe I slipped up on that. My bad everyone. Sorry!

Just shut up with that rofl

If I say something like "Persona 3" and you don't know what I mean until I say "Shin Megami Tensai: Persona 3" then you have some serious mental issues. Short hand for games is fine.
