Anytime I've seen people say the pieces are missing, they're actually there, just hidden. Move the puzzle around to make sure they're not under it, also using the shuffle button may help.

i did. i've moved the puzzle every which direction and used the shuffle button. i've tried saving and closing to refresh. i've logged out, cleared the history and then come back. they're still missing.

Odd. Sorry I wasn't able to help, but I don't know if there's a solution to this other than trying another puzzle. Perhaps they'll be a fix eventually to prevent it form happening again in the future though.
