GAME ITEM EXCHANGE FAQ

Welcome to the GAIA Item Exchange! Here you will find just about everything you need to know about conducting business in this forum and its rules. Some of the information presented has been copied from Aquafire's Gaia Exchange Rules, for easier reference. Overall, the general Gaia Exchange rules apply here, with additional rules more specific towards this forum.

Not everything is covered in here however. If you have questions that you can't find the answer to, you are free to create a thread in the Questions and Assistance forum, or PM any active Gaia Item Exchange moderator.

Furthermore, it should be noted, that GAIA Online assumes no responsibility for the accidental or circumstantial loss of inventory items, Gold, Avatars, lost communications, missed events or loss of personalization of a User's account for ANY reason.

DO NOT SPAM IN THE STICKY
Please remember that spamming random posts, bumps, and off-topic posts in stickies is considered spam.

While we are lenient with spam in the forums this is only to keep topics on the front page. The sticky does not need to be 'bumped' up, nor is it a place to spam for gold. Users doing so will recieve a warning for spam so please do not do so. If you are wishing to post for gold please remember to use the Chatterbox Forum. Thanks!

RULES & GUIDELINES

  • The Game Item Exchange is for the sale of mini-game items ONLY. Selling + buying is fine, as well as just buying items and questing to a certain extent. Holding lotteries, hosting contests, or managing charities yet selling a red guppy in a post to keep it "legal" will not work. The focus of your thread is not on the sale of items; it's on something else. Threads will be moved to the proper forums on a case-by-case basis.

In general, items that can be sold in multiple quantities are ok here. To be even MORE specific, the following items can be sold/bought/traded in this forum
    • Fishing:Fish, trash, fishing rods, bait
    • Casino: Tokens, tickets
    • Towns: Bugs, ink, trash, and flowers
    • Word Bump: Graduate Credits
    • zOMG: Rings, loot
    • Pinball: Power-ups
    • Electric Love Faktori: Power-ups

  • The title of your thread should relate to what you are selling. If you post a title such as "selling a diamondback mask!" but in fact you are not ("sorry, I wish; selling a blue bass helm!" wink , this is considered title spoofing and is warnable by a moderator because you are intentionally misleading other users into your true intent.

-White text, just as misleading, is also not permitted if it is used in conjunction with title spoofing.

-However, this means that threads simply titled "selling fish/flowers/trash/etc!!..." or any other derivative are fine. You are not misleading users with what you are trying to do.

  • Advertising in other users' threads is not allowed. This is a form of unwanted solicitation as well as spam. Both are against the Terms of Service of Gaia. If reported, you will have your post removed from the forum and a warning issued.
    • NOTE: This also includes "bump for a bump", begging in other users' threads, and "bump for X item". All are considered spam and will be warned under the same protocol as advertising.

  • If a thread started off as one thing but becomes spammy in later pages with no relevance to the sale itself, it will be moved to the Chatterbox or the new Friend Chat forum depending on the spam. This includes "I'm leaving Gaia" threads. If all you're going to do is converse with friends, please take it elsewhere.

  • Any mini-game related item that is equippable should be sold at the regular Gaia Exchange, with the exception of items that are needed/used in the mini-games themselves. The following belong in the main Gaia Exchange forum
    • Selling fishing helmets, trash items, fishing trophies (Exceptions: fishing rods and bait)
    • Selling casino prizes from Prize & Joy
    • Selling flower bouquets, equippable trash items.
    • Selling Bachelor caps
    • Selling Framed Artwork (housing items)
    • Selling Body & Parts (car items)
    • Selling Tattoos

  • The following belong in the Wanted subforum of the Gaia Exchange
    • Buying equippable items as listed above, with the same exceptions

  • The following belong in the Charity/Quests subforum of the Exchange
    • Asking for donations of gold, fish, tokens/tickets, etc.
    • Asking for a gold or item loan
    • Exception: If your quest thread simply consists of you looking for sellers of certain items (e.g. rare fish), and you have the funds to purchase such items, then your thread is fine in this forum

  • The following belong in the GAIA Marketplace Discussion subforum of the Exchange
    • Threads strictly advertising the sale of an item in your vend shop
    • Vend shop advertisements (Selling ___ for ___ gold; see my vend)

  • Rants and discussions about the GAIA Item Exchange community. While it may hold the most relevance to the readers in the Exchange, all discussions about the users of Gaia belong in the Gaia Community Discussion forum.

  • Posting in order to disrupt a sale. Even if the item is 100g in the stores, you do not have the right to go into another user's thread and claim "you're scamming people with your prices". It is their item, they have the right to do as they please with it.

  • Highest Donator Contests. This is a type of contest where users donate a sum of gold/items to another user, and the prize goes to the person that donates the most. Such contests are not allowed here, as they run a high risk of becoming scams. For more information, please read this past announcement from the admins.

TRADE SUGGESTIONS: Tips for scam-free trading

While it's definitely fun to do business in the Item Exchange, some people still invariably get taken advantage of by others. It's sad, but true. However, there are steps you can take to try and prevent this from happening, as well as making it easier for moderators to aid you.

  • General Trading Tips
    • Always take the time to carefully examine what is on the other side of the trading window before you accept a trade.
    • It's a good idea to check the text description of an item and not just look at the image since thumbnails can sometimes be mistaken.
    • NEVER confirm a trade if what is on the other side is not what you agreed to. Cancel the trade and start over, or ask the other user to edit and put in the agreed upon items or gold.

  • "Loaning" items to other users
    • Take note of what pages or posts the deal was made on for the "loaned" items. For added security, take screenshots of the posts so that you have proof of the transaction
    • If this was through PMs, if you absolutely need to clean out your inbox, take screenshots of everything and note where you saved them
    • Whichever way you go, try to make the trade agreement in Gaia and keep proof of it rather than making the agreement via IM program, telephone, or some other off-site method where you will later be unable to prove that an agreement was made.

THE REPORTING SYSTEM
(Taken from Kava's announcement in Questions and Assistance, modified by Aquafire for Exchange use, and again modified for here by SevenTen)

Please read the announcement by Jakobo, and this post to learn about how to effectively use the reporting system. ^^

How to NOT use the reporting system.

  • Do not use the reporting system to report yourself for pointless reasons.
  • Do not use the reporting system to ask if we'll be your friends/give you items/do you a special favor/ask us a question.
  • Do not use the reporting system to share your personal opinion.
  • Do not use the reporting system to report very old (month-old for example) threads or posts. Recieving hundreds of reports for threads from page 800 of the chatterbox is a complete waste of our time. If there is a very old thread or post that really needs a moderator's touch, please PM one of the forum's moderators and be very descriptive in your explaination.
  • Do not use the reporting system to report cussing or swearing. Cursing and swearing are not, by themselves, a Terms of Service violation. Harassment or abuse or trolling or posting offensive material with cursing is different than reporting "he said the f-word." You should never report someone for saying the f word or the s word, for example.
  • Do not use the reporting system to report announcements or stickies. Now, if a user makes a Terms of Service violating post within an announcement or sticky, that post may be reported, but do not report the thread itself.

When to use which reporting button.

  • - To report posts. The violation must be in the post you report. Evidence may be given in the report that the violation is true if it is not so obvious, such as saying "it started a few pages back" or similar, but do not report a random post to report a post on the same thread or page. For the Exchange, you can also report advertisements in your selling thread because these are spam if you find it disruptive in your attempt to conduct business.
  • - To report threads. Use this when the first post in a thread or the entire thread is in violation of the rules. For the Exchange, this can be applied to "wrong forum" threads

At the bottom of the Forum Index there are also three additional buttons:

  • [Report A Hacking] - Use this button to report a hacking. If you have been hacked, use this button. If you cannot access your account the best thing to do is to create a new account or use another account to report your own hacking. You need to do this as soon as you can and be as informative as possible. This will better help the moderators deal with your situation.
  • [Report A Scamming] - To report a scam. Use this to report a case in which you were scammed. If you see a thread that you think may be a scam, and have evidence to support your case, use the [Report Thread] button instead. The Report A Scamming button should be used if you yourself are scammed.
  • [Report Abuse or Harassment] - To report someone who is abusing or harassing you. Please do not use this button to report others being abused/harassed because the person you think is being harassed or abused may in fact not care at all, and situations like that are very hard to deal with. In other words, no middlemen.

The report system is for Terms of Service violations (which includes spam posts) and for thread moves only. Read the "do not" section of this post, and then reread it, and then read it again, so you don't get warned/banned for report abuse!

Also remember that abuse of the reporting system will not be tolerated.

Also, to clear up some common misconceptions:

  • When you click the report button you need to fill out a form in order for the report to be sent. Clicking the button and then going back will not file a report. You don't have to worry about accidently clicking the button and sending off a blank report.
  • Getting reported doesn't mean something bad is going to happen to you. If you've done nothing wrong, nothing wrong will happen to you.

When should I directly PM a dedicated moderator? Here are some examples:
  • Jesusbots
  • Normal bots
  • Serial spammers
  • People posting offensive images
  • People spamming off-site advertisement
  • People scam spamming
  • Post deletion request in a thread you were trying to set up

If you want to contact a moderator directly for the above, or perhaps to ask a question or get clarification, to report something more complicated that doesn't fit into the above links, or to report a signature if you can't find a post of the user's to report, simply PM an online mod with a link to the user's profile. Make sure you title the PM something relevant so the mod knows it's not spam.

Remember, for emergencies always PM an ONLINE mod. If you cannot find an online moderator for your forum but have something urgent to report, find one from outside of your forum.

Since your shop is mainly selling fish and stuff, it's fine. It's similar to all the shops in the Gaia Exchange that include mini contests, quests, and other stuff. 3nodding
