Generally speaking, consumers like to see a presentation that's pleasing to the eye and 1024 x 768 does that a lot better than a 800 x 600 resolution. I, myself, actually have the 1200 x something or another...I don't like reading large print. It does to my eyes what small print does to a normal person's eyes.

Edit: It's a 1280 x 1024 resolution, but the poll includes this resolution.

Personally I think it is fine the way it is. I use 1280x1024 resolution, but I don't like to browse in full screen mode. It makes me feel like I'm trapped in the program or something lol..
Anyway, I doubt everyone who polled the higher resolution uses fullscreen. Also I haven't found this size to be a problem. If the page wasn't able to stretch and adjust to the browser it might be annoying, but it can, so it's all good. The only thing I don't like about it is constraining siggy pics to 500 width, because that seems weird when I do have my page stretched.
