Cindy Donovinh here with a Gaia 9 Action News Special Event!

Jeremy Soule is an award-winning composer, and his work appears in such games as Oblivion, Company of Heroes, Guild Wars, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Gaia's own zOMG!. Jeremy was kind enough to agree to answer some of our questions, and also sit down with you guys for a special live chat!

Check out our warm-up interview with Jeremy Soule and don't forget to stick around for the live chat!

How long have you been writing music?

I have been a composer and songwriter since before the time that I could properly write my name. My mom has evidence. There's a few examples of my schoolwork where I had properly notated music but only could write JER of my first name.

What was your first musical experience like?

It's hard to pinpoint exactly where music began for me but I'll never forget the moment I first heard Debussy's "Afternoon of a Faun" on my dad's record player. I didn't hear music. I heard magical energy and from that point on I knew that music was truly a force to be reckoned with.

What got you interested in composing music? Was it always your dream to work in music?

Writing music for me was something I feel like I was inclined to do from the very beginning. I had many musical toys growing up. I started with a toy piano, then an organ and eventually set up instruments all around me in a configuration that is not unlike how I have my computers arranged now!

Where do you find your inspiration? Are there any composers or styles of music that have influenced you throughout your music life?

Of course, my Classical training has had a huge influence on me and my music. But Classical music is really one of the most influential genres of music. Great songs from the Beatles to modern day electronica owe much to Classical.

Listening to music is like taking vitamins for inspiration. The benefit only occurs if you take a wide variety of essential music and expose yourself to it on a regular basis. So kids, take your "3 Bs" -- Bach, Beethoven and Brahms and go from there. DirectSong.com has thousands of free samples. I encourage anyone to go over and explore the world of Classical music. I especially give this advice to aspiring composers and musicians. Bottom line... if you want to take the adventure of learning about Classical music, you'll be greatly rewarded as a person and as an artist.

How were you connected to Gaia? What got you interested in composing music for zOMG!?

I had worked with Dave Georgeson at Namco. When he told me about "battle" (the working name of zOMG) I couldn't resist! I knew that working with him and this team on something so cool would be a great experience. Dave is a trumpet player and he really digs music.

Can you describe the process of creating the zOMG! soundtrack?

Melody melody melody! I wanted to make these sorts of candies in melodic form. The game is very colorful and attractive and I wanted to use many textures and catchy melodic lines herever I could. The music has a "sweet" texture to it and I wanted people to really enjoy the experience of playing a game that is a welcome distraction to real world stress and troubles. None of the music takes itself too seriously. I just wanted to have fun while working on the tunes and it is my hope that this feeling is conveyed to the player.

Were you given early access to the maps and concept of the various areas of zOMG!?

I had a zOMG account very early on. It was great to see the game get better and better each day. I have worked on many video games in my career but zOMG is special. There's nothing like it out there and I really like vintage-but-somehow-still-new feel of the game. I loved playing games like Secret of Mana and Zelda. zOMG reminds me of those classic 2-d games but it looks so much more crisp. I'm glad to see that the isometric overhead format making a comeback online. Games don't need the latest "3D everything" technology to be fun.

What projects are you working on now?

Songwriter and super producer Jeff Miyahara and I have been busy with our new company MusicForThePlanet and we've been working with some of the biggest names in the Asian music industry. Jeff wrote a song that set a sales record yesterday in Japan. He also had no less than four songs chart simultaneously in the Top Ten digital charts in Japan two weeks ago. Jeff and I have a freight train of songs rolling down the tracks for this summer. I've also been busy working with Guild Wars 2, U-Wars, IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey and several other games that I can't talk about quite yet.

The live chat is now over. Thanks to Jeremy Soule for stopping by and answering so many questions, and you guys for reading!
