Welcome to Gaia! ::

Here at Gaia, we've been taking some eco-friendly measures to make our workplace a little more environmentally friendly, such as...

  • Turning off our "just in case" blender that was previously kept running all the time
  • Upgrading our coal-burning servers to modern electrical varieties
  • Releasing our private menagerie of pandas and snow leopards into the wild
  • Watching some documentaries about the environment and feeling pretty guilty for a while
  • Installing water-saving "wool toilets" in our restrooms
  • Saving our own waste to use as fertilizer
  • Converting Lanzer's iron lung to run on unleaded gasoline
  • Wasting your time with Earth Day quizzes so you're not out there producing carbon emissions
  • Dumping our garbage in the San Francisco Bay instead of the otter tank at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

Although we love to lead by example, we hope you'll take the ball and run with it! If you're struggling to think of ways to reduce your own ecological impact, you can check out this excellent Earth Day resource:

We invite you to use this thread to post your favorite Earth-saving green tips. In fact, we insist. Do it! Post!

  • Unplug unused appliances
  • Wear one outfit for the whole week, so you don't have to waste water using the Washing Machine.
  • Instead of throwing soap slivers away. Squish all the soap slivers together, and roll them into a giant soap ball, thus you can use that as your new soap.
  • "If it's brown flush it down, if it's yellow - let it mellow"
  • Turn off all the lights and other appliances in your house, while keeping your computer on, to brag about how much you are saving the world. (doing that right now)
  • Hand wash your clothing in a local river... if possible.
  • Plant a tree, then wait 50 years.
  • Skip work and stay at home, you will be saving Gas and Auto Emissions.

Try to make the most use out of natural heat energy from the sun:

During the winter keep your shades up during the day so you can save on heating.
And during the summer keep those blinds down so you won't need air conditioning as bad.

User Image• Siphon the gas out of your neighbor's car so he has to take the bus to work.
• While he's riding the bus, disconnect the electrical lines from his house.
• Replace all his light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs, which are actually regular bulbs with the filament removed.
• Recycle useless junk you find sitting around his house, like his high school football trophies and priceless stamp collection.
• Drain his swimming pool into his backyard, converting it into new swampland for wildlife habitation.
• Repeat the process with your other neighbors.

- Never eat baked beans again to reduce noxious gasses.
- Grow vegetables in your garden. If you don't have a garden, plant them in your neighbor's garden.
- Instead of watching tellie, go to someone else's house to watch it.
- They say that it takes 10,000 aluminium cans to make a jet. Try it out instead of throwing them out.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned walking or taking a bike (or Segway) instead of motorised vehicles (such as cars, trains, tanks, helicopters, shuttles).

If your local authority doesn't provide door-to-door recycling it'd be a good idea to locate recycling areas. The big supermarket chains like Tesco usually have one by the car park.

On a related note, I probably ought to call the local council. I just moved back here for the university term and our recycling boxes have disappeared. xp

- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. In addition to using less energy they practically never burn out.
- Make a nice smelly compost pile in your backyard for all your neighbors to enjoy.
Grow your own Summer Salad.Container gardening means great fresh vegetables no matter how small your space. Plant cucumbers, lettuce tomatoes carrotts and enjoy all summer
Thnaks for all the great ideas!
