How do people usually dress for these conventions?

Is it typical for people to cosplay as their avatar
or an anime character?

I would hate to drive so many hours to one of these
dressed in jeans and a tshirt only to find out that
I am significantly underdressed. xD. And unimpressive.

I think that sounds like a lot of fun. I really want to
consider dressing up as my own avatar, since every-
one's own avatar is kind of like their own OC, when
you think about it.

It would be a lot of fun to do, I think.

I'm not really sure whether I plan on actually going
to one yet. I'd have to check my schedule, take a
few days off work, and make sure I had the money
for the trip.

I would probably go someplace fairly close, like Austin, Texas.

rave attire
goth attire
cybergoth attire
steampunk attire
catgirls
schoolgirls
horrible cosplays
good cosplays
AMAZING cosplays
crossplays in each of the previous sections (horrible, good, amazing)

Pretty much, as long as you stick to the con's dress code (no indecent exposure, and no nipples for guys) you can dress however you want. Just remember to bathe, is all I ask. sweatdrop

would a corset be considered indecent exposure? redface i have a Misa Amane cosplay (from death note) and its not showing anything but i'm not sure if it would be allowed sweatdrop

Basically, don't show nipples or crotches and you're okay. I've seen Sexy no Jutsu cosplays, along with Matsumoto from Bleach and Leeloo from The Fifth Element. That's comparably pretty tame.
