Thanks for the wonderful guide!

I'm planning on going to Amecon 2006 in.. well, 2006 xd I was too young to go this year (am 15 gonk ) anoyingly. Still, at least that gives me a couple of years to round up some anime fans to go with.

i'm sorry you couldn't make it yet! the first year i worked our con i was 14, almost 15, i had a month to go, and i had just barely made the cut-off. (14 was the youngest) *thinks back* wow, that seems so long ago!

So wait, there's an age limit? Is 16 old enough? I've been wanting to go to a con for a little while now(I'll admit, I haven't really been an anime fan very long sweatdrop ) the only problem is, I live in Saskatchewan, there're no conventions of any kind in the province... any help?

I only know of one con with an age minimum and that's Yaoi Con. You have to be 18+ to go. Other than that, the only age restriction that would be on you is what your parents set on you.

To staff a con, you do have to be a certain age (varies from con to con) and if you're a minor you must have a parental approval sheet signed.

Actually, I've heard about several cons that are making parents sign a permission form for you to be there, if you're under a certain age.

There is actually like, one con in all of Canada, ever, I think, maybe 2, but yes, they're rare and hard to get to. All the rules and stuff regarding age limits will be posted on the con's website, so you can always check there for it. And the anipike link is a good one for finding cons, and I think there's another one posted on the first page as well.

Depends on what part of the world you're in, then ^_^. Here in Cali they don't have any kind of rules about parental permission slips for anything, but staffing. None that I know of anyways... then again I 'm 19 so I don't really pay too much attention to age limits unless I'm bringing one of my underage friends with me ^_^;;. And actually, I require parental permission forms if my young friends come with me. Mostly just to make sure that they did agree to let my friends come with me and so that if something does happen (like injury or something) I can take care of it.

But yeah, I agree. Just check the websites for the cons for whatever the age limits are (if any).
I would like to point out another helpful hint for the con-goers.... bring forks.
we thought we were all bad-a** and prepared with our ramen and everything for dinner until we realized none of us had remembered forks or even any hoshi! (What's this?? no chopsticks at an anime convention? *gasp*) *shakes head* We had to send two people downstairs in pajamas to find forks. it actually worked, but still, remember to bring forks!

I've been wanting to go to a convention for a while, but I live in the Florida Panhandle and I've never heard of any conventions near here. However, I just discovered that there is one in Atlanta and I kinda wanted to go, but after reading your thread, now I really want to go and I feel so prepared and everything. You rock!

I too am from the panhandle of Florida (Bay county if anyone cares to know...) I'm going to Megacon in Feb. it is in Orlando, and great fun. I had to miss most of it due to a card tourney, but if it hadn't been for the tourney, I would have never know about cons. This thread is great advice for cons, and I'm gonna use it as a reminder on what to prepare.
Anyway, this thread is to help those new to cons, and one part you went over was cosplay. I'm new to that, any help there for picking who/what to cosplay as? Especially if it is with a group, like I hope for it to be.

There are so many people out there looking for that kind of advice. The first advice anyone will give you, is cosplay a character you like. You don't have to look like them, that's what wigs are for, just go for someone you like. School uniforms, are fairly easy to make/find in thrift stores and stuff. Thrift stores are your friends when cosplaying if you can't sew. Even if you can, they're nice.
last time i went to Fanime, i noticed that there was a bad smell coming out of most of the otakus.

heads up: TAKE A SHOWER

Most people are pretty good about that, and it's been getting better over the years that I've been going to conventions... thankfully. sweatdrop But yes, there's definitely still a need for showering!
Thanks for the cool guide. I've only been to one convention before, and I felt overwhelmed by it! Didn't know anything!!! But now, I think I'm ready to try again with Nekocon. Thanks! heart
Wow, that was a great guide! Too bad I didnt happen to see it before I went to my first con only about a month ago... But oh well, I still had a great time! xd Cant wait for SakuraCon
