It all comes down to this:
Are you willing to put in the time and effort it takes to make a team effort?
I cannot in all fairness say that this premise doesn't have flaws, it does, big ones.
But I also cannot say it will not work without trying.

Take this hypothetical situation:
Two players are running fairly short on say, red carnations, they agree to each farm towns and the resulting haul of Red Carnations will be distributed evenly between them.
Because towns are unbalanced, one player may get a little in one run, another may get a lot.
Thus the reason why the agreement would exist to Balance the outcome of a single effort.
Greed is a problem, and it would take people willing to put aside their differences to do it. But it can, and has been done.

as you said greed is your main opponent and a hard one at that.

Okay, Between myself and another player, we've been making this process work very handily.
We honestly don't care how much worth something has on the MP or elsewise, if we've got it, we share it.
Usually we let each other know how short we are on a cache and work out how much of each item we can spare and trade that way.
You do the same with us and we'll do the same with you. 3nodding

Persistent Alchemist

If you're interested, there's a small group I'm forming right now that consists of myself and two other people.
We let each other know how short we are on something and work out what we can spare for the other person if they're short on a component as well.
We've also been doing the same with the caches.
Say I'm looking for aquamarine Caches (and I am), and one of you happens to have one but my recent crafting hasn't yielded one.
We swapped the caches.
Much more efficient.

If you have a system in place where users can one-sidedly trade for something of increased value, all that's going to result is people taking advantage of that. Higher-end items will be drained quickly.

It's fine if you want to do like fish color exchanges, but 1g trash to 1k trash simply isn't going to end well.

Some components are harder to get than others... For instance i can go into towns and collect white xerox papers like mad... but I can't get that many feathers in zomg.. Thus, if I wanted to make caches, I wouldn't zomg at all, which destroys the entire point of the recipe using ingredients from everywhere. confused
