Good strategy for penny ante n00b alchemist?

Hi, I really haven't gotten into alchemy yet. I've only made 2 items and i'm still level one. I'd like to try and get it, especially now that I've got like 50 philosopher's caches, but I'm trying to find some small items with relatively easily obtained components to start with. Even on Level One a lot of them need like, 5 copies of a 900 million gold chance item to get something that just doesn't seem worth it. Is there any advice?

I use the Ultimate Alchemy Formula Guide to help me. For level 1 the formula's I found the easiest to craft are: Devil Imp Potion, Silver Star, Joker Card, Amigo Taco, Flames of Rage, and Angel Imp Potion. I'm on level 3, btw.
