Ok so I'm supposed to write this essay about the UN and the problems in the world. And I've been doing all this research and all. And I'm supposed to pick up to 3 major issues to address about the state of the world. So I thought it'd be interesting to hear what you all have to say. What's wrong with the world? What'd the biggest problems? Where should our main concern be? What do you guys think?

So, come on, rant all you want. What is wrong with our world?

Well the three main areas I would focus on would be:

Economy: Global Financial Crisis. Self-explanatory.

War and Peace: Not just in the Middle East, but also in parts of Africa.

Environment: All those that claim about climate change etc.

Those three are pretty broad topics, and covers a lot of areas.

Yeah, those came up again and again so I thought that I should include them obviously haha but I mean I want to know what actual people around the world personally think is the biggest problem. I want their personal opinions. I want to talk to people. I want to hear from normal people, not the politics and whatever. So come on, look around. What do you see as the biggest worry? Personally.

((Thank you for the advice by the way. I really appreciate it haha))

Environment for me, as An Unknown Kunoichi said. But I'm a green freak so I might not be your perfect example of a normal person.

Why is it the largest concern for me?

In the summer of 2007 more Arctic ice melted than was expected to melt until 2050 to 2100. At that rate all of the Arctic ice could be gone by 2013. The problem with the ice caps melting is that it will raise sea levels (which means less land) and also because ice caps are huge stores of CO2. Therefore the more ice in the ice caps that is melted, the more CO2 that will be released... it's a bad cycle. Right now there are almost 400 parts per million (ppm) of CO2 in the atmosphere which is more than the world has seen in at least 20 million years. As it is it's given that the temperature will rise 1.5 to 2 degrees C, which means:
Quote:
At least 30 per cent of species will be at risk of extinction due to floods, drought, wildfire, insect infestations and acidification of the oceans.

Ocean currents will slow, threatening marine life.

Tropical and semi-tropical areas will experience more frequent and deadly heat waves.

Arid and semi-arid regions such as the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, North Africa and coastal Australia will become drier and desertification will set in.

The melting of mountain glaciers and snowpack will accelerate.

Most of Canada will continue to become warmer with increased violent storms and rain in the east. Areas of the southern Prairies will become more arid. The Arctic will experience melting permafrost and melting ice sheets.

Ocean levels will continue to rise for centuries to come to the point where countries such as the Netherlands, Bangladesh and other low-lying regions will likely be inundated.

Crop production will gradually increase for northerly climates, while it will decrease in tropical and semi-arid areas, where most of the Earth’s 6 billion people live.

As you can see it's already going to be catastrophic. Due to a delayed reaction we won't be seeing it immediately though. If we don't act soon (making a global agreement at Copenhagen), the world as we know it could very much be doomed. We already have the technology needed to live a greener lifestyle, but because humans are so miserly nobody's been bothering to use green technology. Which is the worst thing about the issue.

...I just did a report on it in my environmental science class so that's why I know so much about it...

Three biggest concerns for me personally:

The Economy - England is being hit the hardest by the recession which means it's practically impossible for people to get jobs... Even with a degree people are taking on average 6 months to find a job. While the bank bosses use the money the government (i.e. us, the tax payers) gave them to keep giving themselves big fat bonuses.

The school system - I don't think one country has got it right... I could rant about it for hours... The biggest focus of my rant is aimed at children being taught from an early age that they should fear making mistakes... And that they're not really taught important things so much as they're taught how to pass an exam about important things.

Ignorance - On it's own, it's fine. But a large group of ignorant people is dangerous... And there are far too many of them out there for my liking.

Or the lack thereof, in some countries.

Personally, I think the UN would focus on more 'worldly' issues, and school systems are something that belong to federal governments.

However, one's to one's own. :3 You do have a point. I wonder if we could make up an effective school system and get millions out of it... ninja Though choosing what to teach is very debatable.

I agree, in today's world it basically boils down to these three things, as the environment effects all of us, it effects where we can live, how wecan live our lives and prehaps even how long we can live for.

It's usually because someone has a better enviroment then we have that we have wars over nations wanting to become richer or more powerful, hiding under a haze of supposed "noble" declarations and reasons for violence.

Today we need to learn to be more respectful for others. After all, aren't we currently talking with each other from all around the world? It's through understanding we can learn to acknowledge and progress as a civilized world.

Of course, until we bring economy into it, then we just get rich until everything collapses over our heads.

For me the biggest problem are the most basic human rights, which too many people in this world don't get to enjoy.
Not only the right to water and right to be free from harm to oneself, but also the rights to education, freedom of movement etc.

Of course, that problem is strongly linked to the problems of Economy and War.

theres always going to be problems in the world. some things might change but we cant fix everything u fix something that shouldnt be fixed something goes wrong its just how the world is.

Ok wow. Alot of you made really good points. I'm impressed.

fayebelly- the school system and ignorance are veryyyy interesting and fairly unique. I really like that you brought them up. they're both very noteable

Subversive Obstacle- Human rights is thought-provoking. You make a really good point because this is almost indesputable. Anyway, just out of curiousity, where are you? (country wise)

Every country feels its got to be 'one up' on the others, from weapons, to finance to what it does with its people (don't think our gov don't run us, how else would we be in the mess we're in, they've ran us into the ground). and then there is certian countries letting other countries getting away with things, like in africa, the genicides could have been stopped long ago if some of the stronger countries agreed on a way to stop it with out profiting from it. That's a root problem with all the countries today "greed" and not just of money but power over others, control over others. Now it has gotten so bad that NO COUNTRY is willing to stick its neck out for another (why do you think the war in iraq/iran has gone on so long. Sorry, my brains thinking faster than my fingers can type. Honey i could go on and on and on....with just my opinion. the only way to stop all of what's wrong with this world is if every single person in every single country around the world, small and large, knew/believed that what is happing/would happen to another person in a country other than theirs would/is going to happen to them unless they worked together to stop all that is wrong (and only God can make that happen)....I don;t know..then again...there would probibly be anoter chaos trying to get people to agree on what is wrong.. I'd sure like to read your final paper. PM me under Bonny_Blonde_Bombshell if you'd like to share (this is my sisters avi, i'm helping her get further along in it) Good Luck!
