I'm Vietnamese, but I suck at writing, reading, and speaking it. I know a few basic words and I can understand my family partially when they speak in Vietnamese, but that's it.
I'm taking Vietnamese courses on Saturdays at a Catholic school at one of my neighboring town, but I'm not learning anything. All they make us do there is memorize a paragraph, and we have to rewrite that entire paragraph for "dictation" (what my Vietnamese teachers call a spelling test) the next Saturday. I want to learn grammar, verb conjugations, and actual vocabulary like how real language courses teach languages, damn it! I don't want to flip open a book, memorize a paragraph, and then rewrite the paragraph again! That's not learning anything! |

Miss Awesomeness Oh my. Really? Yikes. I got tired of waiting for a Vietnamese thread to pop up, so I just made one. Lemme add you to the list! I can read Vietnamese. I used to karaoke in Vietnamese all the time as a kid, and I didn't know the meaning of the words! I can read Vietnamese only a little--words with the ., ~, and accents give me trouble. Sometimes, even words without accents give me trouble--there are times when I'd put an accent on a word when there wasn't an accent at all! |
