I did some research on the Mongolia/Northern China thing, and it turns out that it's not unheard of for people from Eastern Europe to have DNA from East Asia...so maybe she was right. *shrug*

I read something awhile back on European ancestries that says that, today, there are very very few people who are purely from one ancestry in Europe. Because of the history of the continent, most people are slightly mixed. So even if you're French going all the way back, you could have had a distant ancestor from Italy or Germany or another country.


Well, the Mongol Empire did stretch from eastern Asia all the way to eastern Europe. Not only did cultural diffusion occur, but genetic diffusion occurred as well.

I found this neat map on Wikipedia (yes, of all places) that shows the extent of the Mongol Empire. It's here:
