actually do you know where i can watch disney movies in chinese? i feel like i can improve it by watching stuff like that biggrin

Hey everyone!

I'll be studying abroad in Shanghai soon (for roughly 4 months) and I'll be living with a host family (whom I know nothing about and will not have knowledge of until the day I meet them).

What gift(s) should I bring for them?

So far the suggestions I've seen online have been consistent mostly of:

-chocolate
-wine
-cognac
-wisconsin ginseng
-centrium
-misc items from my local state/from the U.S. (tourist-type items)

Any ideas? (I'd really like to impress/treat them.)

I'm not sure where you can watch Disney movies in Chinese, but you can search
up subbed Chinese/Taiwanese dramas on the net and watch them pretty much anywhere.
It might not work the same as the Disney movies (may improve your Chinese either faster
or slower), but that's really effective for me when I want to improve my Chinese, Korean, or Japanese (I dabble a teeny bit in Korean and Jap).
If you do decide to watch dramas, I can give you some recommendations.

我现在修AP Literature & Composition, Physics, Chemistry, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Statistics 修过AP Calc BC, Biology, US Government, Comparative Government, European History
其实都没那么难，就是考试有时候会排到同一天。。像明天。。。

Hmm. I'm not too sure as I haven't done much gifting myself
not with my Chinese relatives, anyway), though I have seen
my parents do it a lot. The things you listed look fine, but most things I've given
or seen given are clothes (but this is not much of an option for you as you know
nothing about your host family), watches or jewelry, American foods
(nonperishable, or at least make sure it won't expire or rot quickly) and makeup.
Oh yes, wine and chocolate are pretty good ideas!

Makeup and Clothes
Makeup brands like Lancôme and Estée Lauder are really huge and often cost a lot more
than they do in the states. If you want to impress the females of your host family,
this will work. Of course, if you aren't sure there will be females in the family, this may not be
the best option. Clothes, obvious, won't work in your case.
Just for future reference, though, brands like Aero and Columbia are pretty well-known in China.

Watches and jewelry
Watches may be out of the question, as many of them are relatively expensive.
I'd go for relatively inexpensive watches from any decent brand that's not completely
obscure. Jewelry works if there will be females in your host family, which there probably will be. Watches, of course, can go both ways.

American Food Items
Chocolate could work, just make sure they're not super generic.
Wine is pretty good too, so that'd be another safe choice.
Also, is there anything in your area that's kind of gourmet or a specialty that is non-perishable?
Or lasts a while? You could try that.

Ah thank you very much for all the advise!

As for local specialties: I live in Colorado and the only things (non-perishable) that I could think of are: jerky and tea. We have all different kinds of jerky (from animals such as deer, elk, buffalo, snake, etc, etc.) and the celestial seasonings factory is in colorado (america's biggest - or one of its biggest - tea companies). But I figure China is a country that does not have any need for teas for that prolly wouldnt be good right?

I'd say jerky is kinda meh, because a lot of people's tastes vary and
they do have a wide selection of jerky in China (depending where you shop).
So I'd say probably not.
