Well, I know the dictionary verb form of "to begin" is "hajimeru," but I don't know how to say "the beginning."
Do you mean something like "the beginning of the story"?

"beginning" in Japanese is "hajime"

so "hajime wa~" is the Japanese equivilant of "the beginning"

Althoguh if you're starting a story a better idea would be "mukashi mukashi" which means "long. long ago" and works rather like "once upon a time".

If you want to use beginning like, "The beginning of the event," then you should use "-no hajime (の初め)," like, "event no hajime." "No" basically means "of."

Make sense? ^_^
