Start by learning the Kana (Hirigana, Katakana - these are the Japanese written characters)
Once you have those memorized (which will just be basic rote memorization, which sucks, but oh well)
Start learning small phrases, and writing them in the kana. Try to avoid learning in romaji. There are a lot of courses out there online that are free, look around youtube and such for places to teach pronunciation.

Ideally, take a Japanese course at a local college. But if not, buy a textbook and self-study.

and don't glance sideways at Kanji lest you burst into tears.

i agree; taking a class is one of the best ways to get good practice, and then if you're really into it, you should study abroad for at least a few months. if a college course isn't something you're able to do, look into local private teachers, or self study! i've been studying it for 3 years in college now, and that's the best advice i have to offer.

i agree; taking a class is one of the best ways to get good practice, and then if you're really into it, you should study abroad for at least a few months. if a college course isn't something you're able to do, look into local private teachers, or self study! i've been studying it for 3 years in college now, and that's the best advice i have to offer.

and im poor too so the only available option for me would be an online course

No I murder the language. The best bet is taking classes and practice with a native speaker. You could try the Rosetta stone. FYI: no native speaker near by then try making a pen/phone/Skype pal. If not then Japanese drama shows or anime where you can hear it in conversational usage.
