DO BAND UP is the national search for individual musicians to form Southern Africa’s ultimate super-band.
Not to be confused with a ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition, DO BAND UP is unique, and consists of a completely novel format.
Thousands of hopefuls will converge on regional auditions in several of South Africa’s premier music cities, but only a handful will make it to the final national auditions in Pretoria. From this talent pool, 20 musicians will be selected:
5 vocalists
5 guitarists
5 bassists
5 drummers
The 20 aspiring rock star finalists will be thrown together in a mansion, where they’ll have to eat, sleep, work and play together. In the house, issues including compatibility, creative differences and flexibility will come into play. Only the true, dedicated professionals will endure.
The house will be rigged with webcams to take the whole reality based talent show to a completely new level. Viewers will be able to interact and communicate with the finalists through chat rooms, web casts, and live feeds and tune in at any time, day or night. Recordings, videos and feeds from the house will be distributed through Telkom’s Do Portal, viral platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Google Video and extensive emails campaigns.
Industry professionals (for example: record label CEO Peter Lacey and radio rock legend Barney Simon) together with FHM model and Survivor finalist Brigitte Williers will be watching the finalists’ every move. This scrutiny will push them harder and open a window into the reality of the music world. So DO BAND UP becomes more than just a platform for great South African music…it becomes a breeding ground for talent that can and will take the world by storm.
The project will culminate into rehearsed performances at a venue in Pretoria, where in front of a live audience the finalists will battle it out every Friday for 5 weeks for that ultimate spot in the last four, a record deal with a premier record label, accommodation for a year, and the opportunity to take the world by storm.
Why now? South Africa’s rock scene has been simmering for years. As more local bands start to crack the international scene, the rivalry is as fierce as ever. Vocalists, guitarists and drummers everywhere are vying for a top spot in a top band. And this concept will give musicians across the country the chance to do just that.
With a novel format, DO BAND UP will introduce the finalists to already successful bands through weekly workshops and rehearsals. These established bands will perform with the finalists, assist with song choices and familiarize the finalists with the South African music industry. All captured and broadcast via streaming video and audio on the Telkom Do Portal. Also acting as the final celebrity judge, the bands involved with the musicians during the week, will directly influence and assist in selecting South Africa’s future rock kings.
With exposure on national radio, television and print, we’re sure to witness the birth of South Africa’s next big thing!

Every Friday at TING'S 'N' TIMES in Pretoria contestants will perform with their band of the week and judges will put the contestants with the lowest score in the bottom 8..
