It is Japanese, and it read nichi, hi, or ni. It means day, or can also mean sun.

Could anybody with a better knowledge of grammar than me explain the use of まで in the last
sentence of this extract from '神様' by Hiromi Kawakami?

While I understand what the sentence means, I don't fully understand how まで is used in the
I had just learnt that まで meant 'until' or 'up to', but is there
some idiomatic meaning to it as well? If you were to read it with that meaning, the sentence
would read as, 'Although I had previously been to that place in the early Spring to see the snipes,
it was the first time I had bought until my lunch in this way in the hot season'. Which confuses
      me.

Is it a feature of the same literary style that gives である?

I'm not sure, but what I'm understanding is that it means "Although I had previously been to that place in the early spring to see the snipes, it was the first time I had gone so far as to bring my lunch in the hot season."
