Americans wanting to live in UK

I honestly have no idea! xD
And all the sites I've looked at seem to complicate things.. x_x

Scenario; a woman who was born and lived in the USA all of her life wants to suddenly travel to the UK and live there instead. She is single, and has one child recently adopted.
What would be involved in that?
Don't you need some kind of visa?
Would it be allowed?

UK Yankee is an excellent place to start looking for information.

You will need a visa, but I hear that it's the work permit that's the most difficult to get when it comes to moving abroad.
