In the year 2022, the Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing
Game, Sangriel, is released. With the Nerve Gear, a virtual reality helmet that stimulates
the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game
characters with their minds. This break through is considered the next step in the gaming
world, everyone believes that this will be the next big thing.
A beta test is put out to a select 100 players, they are allowed to play the game
for almost several months before the final release. This allows for many of them to
level up and get themselves good standing amongst themselves - most of them starting
a guild amongst themselves in each faction.
On November 6, 2022, all the players log in for the first time, and subsequently discover
that they are unable to log out. They are then informed by Kayaba Akihiko, the creator of
Sangriel, that if they wish to be free, they must reach the 100th floor of the game's tower
and defeat the final boss. However, if their avatars die in-game, their bodies will also die in
the real world. No one understands what is going on and for the first few days panic seems
to run through the game, many of the players commit suicide unable to handle the reality
of being stuck in a virtual reality game and the dangers they will run into. The imaginary
war between the two factions becomes a real thing, the race that most were ignoring -
now becomes the most important thing in their lives. Everyone wants to leave, they want
their life back.
Now December 20th, 2022, those who are still alive are learning to live in their new world.
Regular raids have been deployed to the Stone Bridge and The Tower in an attempt to
begin to clear the way to the castle. Most have put the fake faction war behind themselves,
knowing that they will get no where if they continue to blame one another and fight. With a
treaty signed, neither side is allowed to attack each other anymore unless it is a sanctioned
duel in a neutral zone where the parameters won't allow a character death. There seems to be
nothing stopping certain guilds though, things have been going wrong - from deaths that
shouldn't be possible to fights that should no longer be fought.
