Story

Will Pern fall to anarchy before it falls to Thread?

Nearly halfway into the 11th Pass, things have not been going well for Pern. The Weyrs' and Holds' populations have been decimated by a recent string of unfortunate events. First struck by a particularly vicious set of storms, followed with crippling waves of disease breaking out after entire food caches were either destroyed or contaminated. These storms were bad enough to have taken a good portion of Pernese lives, the illness crippling those unhappy survivors and felling much of the planet's working population.

As the whole world struggled to recover from these brutal blows, a far more dire threat shadowed their skies: the mindless, voracious, ancient enemy had returned. Thread had come to claim what remained of a crippled Pern, eliciting fear and panic from the people once more. The wondrous machine of the ancients, AIVAS, to this day remains undiscovered and buried in the wreckage of Landing. Unprepared in the short two Turn interval between tragedies, the Weyrs struggled to bolster their numbers, and prepare for a long and bitter haul. However, the Holders are not making it easy. Unwilling to give up what little they've managed to scrape together, they refuse to give tithes to the riders and have also refused to give up their children as candidates. In fact, Searches have become feared.

People hide their children, but the Weyr needs them if they are to fight Thread. So the riders and their dragons do as they must for the survival of Pern. Candidates are taken, regardless if they are willing or not. Because of this, the hatchings have become much bloodier than usual. The hatchlings seemed to have picked up on their candidates' unwillingness to be there. With the alternative in mind, the dragons have begun to take whatever that can get. However, the Weyr has far more pressing things to attend to - such as how to feed their many mouths on few provisions and tithes. Food for them has become scarce, causing the riders to have to scrounge and hunt outside of their home more often.


Now, ten Turns after Thread began to fall, Pern is finally showing signs of healing. The stress of Threadfall has dampened the process, however, and tensions still run high. People remain afraid of Searches and candidates are still being kidnapped from their homes, from time to time, if need be. Tenuous advances have been made to reforge old bonds between Weyr and Hold, but the future remains uncertain.

Rules

First of all, we are not following canon Pern here. Golds and Bronzes can Impress to any gender and any sexuality. However, in order for for this kind of Impression to happen, it'll take a great deal from that candidate. As such, these could indeed be quite rare.

Ruth is the only white dragon. There will be no special colors.

Be literate. This doesn't mean ten paragraphs or a wall of text. Just make sure what you're writing is easy to understand and do your best.

No godmoding. Your characters are human/dragons. They can't walk on water.

Be polite to everyone! If someone bothers you, PM your issue to The Weyrlady or one of the captains. Do not address it in thread.

Follow all Gaia TOS.

All characters must be approved before you begin role-playing.

Have as many characters as you can play. If you can keep up with seven, then have seven. If you can handle two, then take two.

No offensive font colors, please. If a crew member can't see it and asks you to change your font color, please don't argue.

No begging for a specific color. The more you beg for a certain color, the more likely it is that your character will be mauled by that dragon. And then you just might not Impress. So no begging.

As for the fire lizards, we will be opening breeding once a month. That is all! We have to make sure that the flit numbers are at a reasonable amount.

There will be no Hear All Dragons characters, nor any other particularly special abilities.

There will be no flying between times. The ability of dragons to do this is not common knowledge - assume your character does not know unless told otherwise, and your character will not stumble upon this ability by accident.

There will be rules to follow within each forum in the guild. Make sure to read and follow them so there will be no problems.

The North rim of the bowl is called the Seven Spindles for the high, crownlike points arrayed arounf yhat end, formed of old flow from the Volcano and clipped to sharp spikes when the caldera blew up in ages past. My job entails mostly behind-the-scenes work – I am a busy cog in the plot machine, and I also spend a lot of time planning out clutch details and critiquing hopeful character profiles. Aris the Squeak: Hello! I’m a 20 year old Australian who has just finished college, I was studying to work in libraries. Now I’m a fully qualified Library Technician (which is a step below a Librarian), my aim is to end up as a teacher librarian in a school library! I’m also doing modelling starting in 2012 which I’m pretty darn excited about!
I’ve been role-playing for about 6 years now and almost all of it has been Pern related. I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable about Pern (though of course I don’t know everything) and I’m always willing to answer questions.
I love writing, whether it is posts in a role-play or a story. Reading is my second passion and I will read pretty much anything. I’m also into games (mostly console) but I would hardly call myself a ‘gamer’. I love fantasy and sci fi and I can never get enough of it.


HeartsBeatingLikeThunder: Howdy! The name is a mouthful, so most people usually call me Thunder! You'll notice it sooner or later, but I am a proud Texan! It tends to show in the way I talk(type). I'm twenty-three and have only recently begun role-playing in the Pern world. Most of the work I do around the guild is mainly organizing and keeping the place as tidy as possible. I do tend to get distracted quite easily though, so there will be lapses of my work. I may not be as knowledgeable as my other captains, but I shall do my best to help with anything I can! I'm usually online as much as I can be, however, I do have to spend a good deal of my time deep within my games. Need any help or have any problems, I'll be happy to help!
