Why are items so expensive?

I used to love being on Gaia, I would love the fact that I could puzzle all day long and work my way up to the amount of gold I'd need for an item but you can't even do that anymore even if you do insane all day long for 8 hours you still won't have enough gold for half the things you would want like Monthly collectibles or Evolving items and I just want to know what happened to this amazing site? Why are the prices so ridiculous? I should not have to spend actual money to have fun and dress my avi.
