Which is safer from external threats? Clicking the remember me checkbox or typing in my password every time?

I'm not worried about people stealing from me sitting at my chair. Got that part covered.

generally it's safer to not click "remember me". if you're the only one who uses the computer and you're very careful about clicking links i wouldn't worry too much. i always use the "remember me" on my personal computer because with out it i get logged off too frequently.

I was checking my pms today and had one from a old friend telling me they were in the arena. The link was a tiny URL, I checked the properties. Took me to the arena. Then there was a pink giftbox floating across the screen. I clicked on it thinking I was lucky. But it took me to a login page. I knew then something was up, So I didnt log in. I went back a page to where the gift box was. Viewed the proerties of the giftbox and it was a ripway link. I am shocked they can even make a floating giftbox a ripway link... how sad. Have you seen anything like that before. Is this a new way to scam?

I get messages all the time from fake admins and all that wanting my pw. Sometimes links sent in pms are ripways... But, never seen a floating pinkbox that was a ripway link. eek

Thought I would post to see if you had seen this before.

chances are the link wasn't to the real avi arena. i have seen many scams where the avi arena link is very, very similar to the real one and the site looks identical to gaia. i have seen giftboxes on those sites too.

i wouldn't be surprised if some very clever hacker found a way to code a fake gift box to appear since the avi arena keyword area supports HTML. i'd definitely like to see a screenshot that shows the scam giftbox and the URL of the page it appears on.

I realized that the URL has two "L"s in Gaiaonline, oneof the replacing the I. The girl in the arena has nothing to do with this, I'm sure of it. I've seen her in the arena so much, and I know she's more mature than to do something like this. Someone picked her out because she's popular in the arena. If you click the box, it takes you to a screen where there's a login page, but you do get a "Leaving Gaiaonline" message when you click on the original link in the pm to get to this arena page.

That box looks pretty offical, it floats around and everything.

it's pretty easy to copy a website's code unfortunately. this is why it's so very important to manually check the URL every time. the better phishing sites have URLs that look really similar as opposed to obvious stuff like "mywebsite.com/gaia/fake_login" (and yes, i did actually get sent a link to one that said "fake login" in the URL).

I got a PM saying the following:

We are a secret chairity suported by the Admins.
We have been at work over the past 2 years secretly donating items and gold with only the admins knowing full about us.
The Admins have granted us a unique gift, a gold chance machine for our chairity.

You have been chosen at random to recieve this chairity!

The way it works is you enter a gold amount, along with verification that its your account your on, like in the Marketplace or Gifting. Then click submit, simple and easy, but you are not gaurenteed the amount you entered unless you get lucky, you can enter up to 100k (100,000gold) but the higher the number you put, the less likely you are to get it. The gold machine is all about chance. All we ask of you is to click were it says Charity Helper below.

(removed link for obvious reasons)

This was from a random normal looking Gaian like myself and any of you.

I reported this PM. Now I'm going to change my passwords.. because I'm paranoid like that. ^_^

Fear Not Citizens

Greetings, My name is G Angel and I approve this message.
I am glad I found this place because trying to explain things over and over gets tiring.

For A Hero Is Here.

My account was hacked Friday. I'd always been careful, but it happened anyway, so I must not have been careful enough. I've already submitted a report, but I'm wondering if anyone can offer some advice for what to do until this gets sorted out. Or maybe a support group? Yeah, that would be good.

Edit: Also, tell me if this sounds plausible. I had taken a trip to Mexico two weeks ago. While there, I logged in several times using the PC at the resort's business center. Although it was some time ago, is it possible I had been keylogged then? That is the only thing I can think of.
