people fall for password scams, some of them look pretty official and under the threat of being banned many people freak and give their password out. it's understandable, it's a fairly easy mistake to make if you don't know a lot about how gaia works or account security.

MAJOR UPDATE:
to anyone who uses the old staff colors signature banners, the links are broken due to the journal update. PLEASE update your sig to link to this thead.

to anyone else: if you know someone who uses the staff colors sig banners and it links to my journal, please PM them and let them know they need to update their link.
also a note try using exotic characters if you have any and not using all small or all caps…… for the password!,
In which case more then three links searching for gaia give you some of those scams mentioned, actually if there is a link to gaia online.com
make always retype the password before it loads for example
remember
gaiaonline.com
&
gaiaonIine.com
are not the same if you can't distinguish retype gaiaonline.com… always

As a recently hacked person, I would like to give some pieces of adivce.

1) Don't use real words in your password. Their is software with an entire dictionary for cracking passwords.
2) Make codes with your friends. Before they accept a trade to you, have a secret word that you must put in the title first. My older sister lost her sythe when my friend got hacked last month because Hippy-Girl closed the trade.
3) If you think you have been or are being hacked CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY!! It saved my other friend and could save you too.
4) get as much info after the hacking and before you report. Screen shots such as this are the best evidence against the person.

Thats all that I've gotta say. I hope you guys stay safe and don't get hacked like I've been. She got my password when I've never told it to anyone. No one is safe.

i have to disagree with that, because you can be safe using gaia or any other site on the net- you just have to be careful. you can protect yourself from being hacked by using good personal security practices such as having good (always running) and up to date anti-virus, a firewall, downloading from secure sites (avoid P2P and porn sites at all costs) and being aware of your personal info- before entering any of it make sure to check where you are. if the site doesn't look right, don't enter your info there. keep your password to yourself and limit it to use in just one place- and don't forget to change it every couple months.

you can be safe online, but it's all up to you to make yourself as safe as possible.

if you think (or know) your comp has a virus, remove it from the internet ASAP until the virus is gone. change all your passwords from another virus-free computer.

mods that are on your friends list also appear blue, you can check for sure by looking at the big list of gaia staff here.

If I could make my avie glomp you and kiss your feet, I would, no lie!

I'm usually a very savvy person, but I had NO IDEA mywebsearch was a scam!! Thank you so much for putting that up!!! heart

I'm just lucky that I have an automatic virus scanner that scans every few days, and that the last firefox update I did uninstalled mywebsearch, and I never reinstalled it. Thank god I found this thread before I did!!

You are a life-saver. I'm giving people links!
Wow. Making this thread was really nice of you. Haha. I'm to lazy to make any kind of thread... I did get one of those password scam PMs or whatever you call them. I didn't fall for it, it was so obvious. Especially with the bad punctuation and grammar. mrgreen
