Hello, welcome to my little guide. I'm here to explain the process in Gaia Fishing, called "Bait Degradation."

This little factor makes a huge difference in fishing, whether its trophy fishing or just casual fishing.

So, read on, and learn about this key aspect of fishing!

Bait degrades, which means that every time you use bait in a certain time period, it causes the bait to worsen. The bait's effect resets after 12 hours from the last bucket fished. There are 3 types of bait.

A quality, obviously the most powerful, as it can catch up to 9 Large-classes fish, 18 Medium-class fish, 54 Small-class fish, up to 18 trash, and up to one RARE. F bait, in fact, produces A "quality" bait, for the first 2 rounds, as long as you haven't fished in the past 12 hours. D bait also produces A "quality" bait, but instead of the first two rounds, it's the first five rounds. A bait, stays A "quality" permenantly, perfect for bulk fishing or a trophy race.

D quality bait, however, isn't very powerful, requires power-filtering, and it can only catch up to 3 Large-class, up to 11 Medium-class fish, 54 Small-class fish, 32 Junk, and up to 1 rare. D quality bait is produced by F bait as it's 3rd-5th buckets, or D bait as 6th bucket or beyond.

F quality bait requires very heavy filtering, but is a good profit-maker if you know how to use it well. F quality can only catch up to 1 large, up to 6 Medium-class, 42 Small-class, and up to 51 Junk. Some people say that F quality bait is able to hook rares, but that is an unexplained glitch.

Mardoll

[Assuming 65+ distance]

A-Quality
Junk: 18, Small: 54, Medium: 18, Large: 9, Rare: 1 or 0

D-Quality
Junk: 32, Small: 54, Medium: 11, Large: 3, Rare: 1 or 0

F-Quality
Junk: 51, Small: 42, Medium: 6, Large: 1, Rare: 0

Also, one of the other features is the increase in percentage of chance that Junk will land on your line the more you play the game without letting it reset

CuBiC
...Also, the numbers under bait level, I think it would be nice to note that these are factors of 200 (half percents) chance of catching that specific type of fish. (Assuming you're at the correct distance. The code will actually do all the checks, but will "throw away" the result if you're not in the proper distance)
These will steadily decrease as you catch fish during a single game (they're supposed to represent initial population, but the code checks directly against a random number in the range 0-200).

Quote:
Say you just started an A bucket, no rare. There are 18+54+18+9=99 fish remaining in the lake. You cast your rod. After a bit, the game checks to see if you caught anything. You roll a 118, so you don’t hook anything. 50 frames later, the game checks again. This time, you roll a 42. Fishing counts down the 9 large fish to 90. Since 42 isn’t in the range 90-98, it isn’t a large, and the game counts down another 18 to 72. Since 42 isn’t in the range 72-89, it isn’t a medium, so the game counts down 54 to 18. Ah-ha! Since 42 is in the range 18-71, our fish is a small.

Degradation has much to do with rare fish. How? It's believed that only A or D quality bait can hook Rares, but the odds are an estimated 1 out of 5000 buckets. There were glitches that caused the bait's quality to not matter, but it is speculated that the glitch has been fixed.

Glitch #1: Non-deducting bait glitch;

Randomly, bait will not deduct from the bait menu.

RaidenKazama
I'm not sure I've seen anyone mention this error before so I'll post it.
I was fishing in Gambino, and I filled up my F bait(Acting as A) And the "Choose bait" screen came up (Naturally). So I clicked D bait to continue fishing, then my Rod wouldn't load... and after 10 seconds is said the "A fishing game is already in progress..." message. o_O

Now thankfull I think my fish still saved (I think)...so I geuss it doesn't matter much but 'twas weird, lol.

This glitch has started to happen much more commonly, and it seems it happens if your bait was not deducted properly; It could be the resolution to the "Non-deducting bait glitch" (see above)

Note* This section has not been fully researched.

It is believed that there is a further code for degradation, called secondary degradation. The secondary degradation rule is that bait will still slightly degrade bucket by bucket even if it was a spree of many A quality baits; for example the first A quality bait would be better than a 5th A quality bait because of this effect. Therefore this is a disadvantage to heavy fishers.

Secondary Degradation is triggered at the same time as regular degradation, but is only noticible after 100+ A quality baits in a row.

Fishing Convo
Reverend Paqo: when i found out about all the stuff before hand, i noticed that there was two ways that baits
Reverend Paqo: degrade.
Reverend Paqo: the main one, which is what is most known about
Reverend Paqo: and then, exactly like you said, the secondary degrade
Reverend Paqo: the secondary one though, is only noticeable after several dozen buckets.
Reverend Paqo: you've all seen it if you've fished competitively
Reverend Paqo: i was saving up A baits, 1,000 to be exact, and i was going to do 2 runs of 500 straight.
Reverend Paqo: the first one with no stops. just solid A baits, dredging the lake.
Reverend Paqo: record every 10th game
Reverend Paqo: the second set of 500, go with 3 hour pauses between each 125 baits, again dredging
Reverend Paqo: i found that if you go solid with no pauses your catches keep getting worse steadily.
Reverend Paqo: but if you let it sit at all, it'll get slightly better.
Engel_Clone: yeah, I have noticed that myself.
Reverend Paqo: that was when i did my junk run back in 05
Reverend Paqo: i did 200 buckets a day dredging durem
Reverend Paqo: one day i did 200 solid no breaks, and noticed a ton of junk
Reverend Paqo: then another day it was divided out with some pauses and there was less
Reverend Paqo: thats what spurred the project
Reverend Paqo: i tried an a bait at the end of every day
Reverend Paqo: on the day i went solid, i got way worse catches

Quote:
Q: If I fish one time at 11am with F bait, then fished again later at 2pm with F bait again. Do I have to wait until 11pm or do I have to wait til 2am?

A: You would have to wait another 12 hours after your last bucket (2am)

Quote:
Q: Will the degradation still be in effect if you change areas?

A: Yes, even if you go to Durem after Gambino, when your bait is degraded in Gambino, it will still pass on to the next fishing spot. (Durem in this case)

Quote:
Q: If I just sit in multiplayer fishing without choosing any bait, will it interrupt the resseting process?

A: No, it won't, unless you choose a bait.

Quote:
Q: If I buy bait now but it is degraded (because I already fished 5 buckets today, will it reset in twelve hours?

A: Yes, it will. You can only interrupt the resetting process if you use the bait.

Dragonblade1214
Quote:
If my F bait fully degrades to F quality, can I switch to D bait, and have that act as A quality?

Unfortunately, the answer to that is no.

After fishing at least 5 times with any bait (in this case, it's F), the only other one that'll be A-quality will be the A bait itself.

BUT, if you fish twice with F bait, you can switch to D bait and it'll still be A quality. So using two Fs and three Ds will all count as A-quality. After 5 times of fishing, all the quality baits will be their respective form (i.e. F bait with be F-quality, D will be D-quality, and A will be A-quality) until they reset.

A Grade Fishing Bait: The most expensive and most effective fishing bait. This bait will always remain A quality. Recommended for Trophy Fishers and not for newbies. (Cost: 250g)

A Quality Bait: The quality of bait from the first two F baits, or the first five D baits, and is the most effective quality of bait. This bait can hook up to nine larges, and one rare.

Bait: The food used for fishing in Gaia Online.

Bait Degradation: The process which bait in Gaia Online loses effectiveness over constant usage.

Bate: A spelling mistake for "Bait".

Degradation: The process which an object loses effectiveness over constant usage.

D Grade Fishing Bait: The middle classed bait, it provides 5 A quality buckets, and then D quality bait after the first five buckets. (Cost: 100g)

D Quality Bait: Decent quality bait, obtained by having a F bait on the third-fifth bucket of the day, or the sixth bucket (and beyond) of D bait. This quality bait hooks trash more often than A quality bait, but less than F quality bait. It is rumoured that it can only hook up to three larges. This bait has the potential to hook rares, also.

F Grade Fishing Bait: The cheapest, and naturally worst bait there is. Acts like A quality bait for two rounds, then D quality for the three after, and F quality after that. This is the only bait that can degrade to F currently. (Cost: 25g)

F Quailty Fishing Bait: The least effective quality, also Junker's best friend. It can only hook up to one large, and most of it's catches will be trash. Only F bait fully degraded can reach this quality.

Rare Fish: Estimated ratios of catching one: 1/5000 (= 0.0002%) at the start of each bucket. Rares can be hooked more than one time in a bucket if you miss catching the fish, about 1/4 (= 25%) each time you cast the line. These fish tend to go for a large sum of money in the Market.

Secondary Degradation: A form of degradation that we don't know much of, a process whereas the bait will degrade more and more as you use it, even if it is A quality bait, and needs further research.
