This is amazing. I'm floored and touched that this has happened. There could be no more thoughtful, elegant way to honor Terry Pratchett and to send up a silent prayer for all those with Alzheimer's.

The disease runs in my family a bit, and my sister was the first to make a Facebook group for Pratchett fans after the announcement. I'll definitely try to get something about this in the group announcements.

Thank you for bringing this to Gaia! Fortunately I have a lilac bush in my backyard to pluck from . . .

hmm not for me :l
Well a lot of people don't know this, you can now get Alzheimers as early as age 25!

A lot of people in my family have had this illness,I hope they can find a cure!

Also be careful of what pills you take, like for bladder, you can get some werid side-effects that are like the effects of this illness like, suicidal, thinks everyone wants to poison them, and more...

You can help prevent it by useing stuff made with sage.
You have no idea how happy this made me to stumbled upon this topic....

heart I LOVE PURPLE! heart
I have heard of this but hopefully there is a cure.

Hi everyone!!! mrgreen
My grandfather has it (he's 88 ) and lives most of the time in a war veteran's home...however he always remembers me and keeps a positive spirit. He's kinda an awesome grandfather who's going through this sad disease.

The family keeps him active and gets him out for the day, or my Mum gets him out for a week at a time to stay with her. He's there most of the time and that's good.

Thanks for starting such an important thread!
Wow wow wow wow wow.... This thread has exploded!

Thanks to everyone who has posted! With this kind of participation, there's no question that we can spread the word about Alzheimer's! Remember to wear the lilac! /hugs

This is a wonderful thread and as soon as I'm done posting this I'm going to find some purple for my avatar to wear.
My family has been affected by Alzheimer's. My grandfather was diagnosed with it somewhere around 5-6 years ago. For awhile he could still do most activities and my grandmother could still take care of him. Then about a year and a half ago she was unable to take care of him any longer because he had progressed rapidly and she had her own health issues. Even though I was only 19, I moved in with my grandparents and became my grandfather's primary caregiver.
It was a very difficult situation. It was hard to see such an intelligent man basically revert back to the mind of a child. My grandfather had taken care of me many times when I was younger; now it was my turn to take care of him. It was truly the most stressful situation I've ever been in. Yet it was also rewarding. I was able to provide an invaluable service to my family and was able to help keep my grandfather comfortable and in his own home.
This year on March 2, on my 21st birthday, my grandfather fell ill. A week later he died from pneumonia because the Alzheimer's helped it progress to the point that he could not recover. He was 83 and had just celebrated his 64th wedding anniversary with my grandmother. By the time he died, he really only knew one person by name--my grandmother.
