Will You Wear the Lilac on May 25th?

I think it is a great thing to raise awareness about because not understanding makes people scared.
My mother works in Aged care in the unit where people have diseases that make it so they cannot function alone.
It upsets her how few of them have relatives that actually care enough to visit.

And Raise Awareness of the effects of Alzheimers?

Yes, it is sad to watch families run from their loved ones because they don't understand. My job was sending aides in to take care of some whos family had run from their diseases, so I understand how it upsets your Mom. They would much rather have their families caring for them than strangers.

But when they pass away the family that didn't care will be all over the remaining estate like vultures -cough- great uncle Roy -cough-

Oh Akibe, you are so right. Don't want to take care of their family but will be the first ones there for the belongings. I had siblings do just that. The best way to look at that is, I have no regrets. They have to deal with the guilt. My memories will last a lifetime, but the things they ran to get are material and won't last forever.

That is right Rosebud.
Nobody wants their family to abandon them.
Sitting there waiting for them must be hell.

And Raise Awareness of the effects of Alzheimers?
My great-uncle wasn't at my Grandad's funeral, I assume someone had told him my Grandad had passed but there was so much bad blood between the family that it may have taken a few weeks for the news to work it's way through the grapevine.

Anyway, on to happier news! Today was the London Marathon and there were lots of people running, including a bloke called Mike Irving. Mike isn't a Gaian, as far as I'm aware, he's just the guy who had the "Alzheimers" tag for his fundraising page. But as you can see, he's raised £2500 today, and that is what is important, so well done to Mike, and well done to everyone who took part in the London Marathon!

May I participate in your raffle/Alzheimer's Awareness thread?

Alzheimer is the disease that makes you lose memory, right?

You certainly may and yes it does.

When I first heard about Alzheimer's years ago, I knew it by being the disease that makes people lose their memory too. Since then, I have learned that is the nice way to put it.

What I found out was that not only does it take your memory, but it also shuts down your body slowly. Not only does the person regress mentally to a childhood state, but they forget how to feed themselves and even walk. The brain starts forgetting to send signals to the person so they lose control of body functions and the body itself starts forgetting to work. It slowly shuts down the organs in the body until the patient dies.

The sad thing is, not many people know about ALzheimer's or understand it, so rather than take the time to learn about it, they run from it. Alzheimer's scares people and they don't want to deal with it.

omg, I didn't know that... The only reason I know about Alzheimer's is through a book, and it only said that it makes people lose memory. sad
I support this thread entirely!

I hate it when people act as if they have Alzheimer's Disease.
Especially since my great grandma had it.

She died a year or two after she had it. I'm guilty again for not visiting her more often.
She didn't even know who I was or anything, she asked:"Who are you?"

I mean she was the one who taught me how to play piano and who got me into writing. . .
Just popping in to see how everyone is. I'm in the process of a new avi, as you can see in my sig. =] I can't wait for the 25th to come!
I'm going to take part ^^! It's a great idea.
