Why hello there, fellow dharma bums. How are things in the monastery? Is
anyone here seriously considering ordaining monastically in real life? Does
anyone have a family member or friend who has done it? What was it like?

Shiny. I certainly would like to ordain, if only for a little while. I hope that I
really get into it and devote my life to it, but I do not know for certain how I
will react to it so I can't say for certain either way. Just that I'd like to try it.

for the benefit of not only myself but everyone else who dosent exactly know what ordaining means, please if you could explain what it means, and perhapse what kinds of processes one goes through before during and after 'ordainment.'

i ask becuase i am interested in it, but the local temple abbot was rather vague about it.

Ah yes! Well, the details differ slightly from tradition to tradition, but I know
that one will often take a year of novice vows. One will wear something
grey (not the robes of a monk or nun) and go through the head shaving process.

After that year is up, a formal ordination ceremony will take place. Before
that, however, one's hair is allowed to grow a little bit so that on the day of
the ceremony all of the hair, except for a small tuft, is gone. One is then
helped into their monastic robes while being told what each piece and fold symbolizes.

Next one will be asked questions like "Are you a human being?". It sound
silly, but part of the monastic rules say that only human beings can be
ordained, so they have to ask, I guess. The ordination ceremony itself has
to be overseen by senior monks or nuns, and during it the novice takes on
additional vows and that last bit of hair is shaved off before being made into
an offering to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dharmapalas, et cetera.

That's all that I know that happens during a formal ordination ceremony. My
knowledge isn't very detailed, unfortunately. I know that in some countries
like Thailand, you can ordain temporarily for six months, and the process to
going from your street clothes into monastic robes takes place within a day.
Many men in Thailand ordain as a monk for six months between High
School and University or going into the work force. I think that's awesome.

once ordained what happens... what are one's obligations, and privileges?
That sounds very interetsing, though i'd never ordain, i'd like to know more about that sort of thing smile
I'm glad to see that the monestary is still running strong in my absence! ^_^

Are there any new members that need to be added to the members list and if so, is there any info that needs to be added along with it?

Oh I'm stupid -_- ;

I know alot of old people get ordained when their children die.
I have this question. How does one exactly 'practice' Buddhism?
'do it' i suppose-lol

follwing your eight point wheel - like follwoing the moral code and practising (or 'doing') 'right effort' - as in trying your best to remain mindful, to be kind, refrain from harming people etc. Also a little meditation doens't hurt ^^
(i'm a slacker when it coems to meditation though sweatdrop )
