Welcome to the sixth annual Gaia Spirit Week!
You may have been here before, or you may be wondering, just what is this Gaia Spirit Week? Gaia Sprit Week is a completely user-run event to celebrate just how great Gaia is. GSW works just like any other spirit week you might have had in high school or college: everyone dresses up for the day according to a different theme for each day. We pick a bunch of different themes and everyone dresses up their avatar for it to show their appreciation for Gaia, and all the people who work to make it great.
It's a really fun event, and we have a bunch of great contests and stuff going on, so there's something for everyone. And hey, if you stop long enough to have a chat with someone in the forums you'll definitely make some great friends. We've collected quite the group of regulars over the years, and they're a friendly bunch.
So come on in, and have a look around. There's always someone around to chat with.

You might be wondering, what exactly is the point of Gaia Spirit Week?
Or you might not.
But let me tell you.

Gaia Spirit Week is about more than just dressing up for fun and having a good time, though it certainly is that. It's about showing just how much we appreciate this website that we all use, and recognizing what a great community of people inhabit it, and especially the people who make it happen. Spirit Week is for making new friends, talking to people you might not usually talk to, and using Gaia the way it was created to be used - to connect with other people. Most of all, it's about appreciating the people who make Gaia happen, all the moderators and admins who help run it.
Gaia is constantly changing, coming out with new things, updating old things, and always trying to make itself better for it's users. Of course, we don't always agree with the things they do, and that's okay. You don't have to like everything the Gaia team does. But you should still take time to thank your admins and mods, and that's what Spirit Week is all about.

Tell your mods that you love them! Send them gifts, or avi art, or just tell them you appreciate them! It doesn't cost you anything, and it really will mean something to them.

We know how much you guys all love your mods, and we want you guys to share it! But I think a lot of the time, people don't know how. They don't know who the mods are, or what the mods want. I may not have an answer for the second part of that, but I do know the first. Here at Spirit Week, we've put together an easy way for everyone to participate, and do a little something for the mods.

There's this convenient list of everyone who's a part of the Gaia staff, located here, that we used to put together a list of a post from everyone on that list. (The list is not completely up to date, however, so if we've missed anyone, please let us know!) What do we do with that, you may ask?
There's a bunch of things you can do. You can tip that post. It's only 25g and it only takes a second. It's not like sending a trade. If we could get a bunch of people together to do that, we could donate a significant bit of money to each mod, with minimal effort on each persons part.
(For the record, if you tipped each member of the Gaia staff, it would cost you less than 5k! So go for it!)
If you're not interested in donating gold, you could always just send them a PM, telling them you appreciate them, send them some art of their avi, or whatever else you can think of.

We feel that in order to really feel back in time, we might just have to travel past the 1950's for this one. (Sorry, poodles skirts! We still love you!) You can dress up from the Roaring Twenties, Victiorian period, Edwardian, the Stone Age, and anything in between. This is also open to media that is set during these eras, so you are more than welcome to dress as historical figures, fictional or otherwise.

[ { This Mission is Top Secret Day } ]
This message will self-destruct in ten seconds. It is now your task to dress as those gatherers of intelligence that we couldn't live without. Spies, double-agents, ninjas, private detectives, and moles. Bust out those unassuming gadgets, suave attire, and hidden weapons and be sure to decode that information...or whatever it is your superiors want. [Boom]

[ { Tuesday the 9th } ]
[ { Gaian Town Day } ]
Basically, dress in the colors of your favorite Gaia Town; Aekea, Barton, Durem, or Isle de Gambino. Don't have a favorite town? That's okay, we're also opening this day up to the many NPCs here on Gaia Online! So you are more than welcome to dress like the shopkeepers, holiday characters that show up during events, or even ones from the games on the site.

[ { Wednesday the 10th } ]
[ { Cross-Dressing Day } ]
We heard your prayers; you almost voted for this day. Twice! And we realized, this needs to be a day. Dress yourself (or your avatar as the case would be) as the opposite gender; you can do this in a simple or basic way, or pull out all the stops and go all glitz and glam. Keep in mind not to do anything that would be considered offensive, though we would think by now that was a given. Or, if you don't feel like dressing as male or female, how about androgynous?

[ { Thursday the 11th } ]
[ { Sins & Virtues Day } ]
Pretty obvious; be a humanization of one of the seven Deadly Sins, or seven Virtues! For reference, the 7 Sins are: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride, and the 7 Virtues are: Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Patience, Kindness, and Humility. If you want to go the extra mile, gather your friends and get a group of you all in your sinful or virtuous garb.

[ { Friday the 12th } ]
[ { Unknown Day } ]
One of our old favorites - Unknown Day! You pick what the day will be! You'll see we've posted a poll up above. It will close on Thursday to give you time to get ready. The options are as follows:

I. Right in the Feels Day: This day is dedicated to all those emotions we feel, no matter how simple or complex they may be. Make yourself happy as a clam or be as angry as...something angry. We'll also opening this day to various internet memes that we know and love...or maybe wish never surfaced. Ever.

II. Astronomy vs. Astrology Day: Love the stars? Awesome! Love the zodiac? Fabulous! This day is all about the Chinese and Western zodiac. What does this mean? Well, you can represent an animal or creature featured in these, or even the constellation they represent. You can even pick a group of stars not featured in the zodiac, if you so choose.

III.: Elemental Day: Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! Heart! [Go Planet!] This day is all about the elements. Of course, don't forget about the Periodic Table of Elements, since those are important as well!

IV. What Happens In Vegas...: ..stays in Vegas." Today we'd like to have avatars feature those crazy (mis)adventures that you never want to speak of in public. All evidence must be burned, any questions unanswered for fear of questioning either morals or mental health, and tigers returned to Mike Tyson. Don't even question the tattoo on your left butt cheek that you thought was a sweet mermaid, but really resembles Joan Rivers.

V. Video Game Day: In this day and age, it's neck in neck with certain systems winning popularity, but we can't forget to love their origins as well. Those hulking machines in the arcade, ancient retro systems that had cartridges you had to blow into to work, and discs that would scratch after one use. From the 8-bit relics to the HD I'm-going-to-blow-your-mind graphics, the characters that had you keep saving the princess in each castle, dogs that laugh at you when you missed a shot, and ghosts that ran away once you ate the blinking pellet. An ode to the gamer, you might say, so wear your achievements like a badge of pride.

[ { Class Color Day } ]
Everyone's favorite day, back again (like every year), it's Class Color Day! Each year (2003, 2004, etc.) has been assigned a specific color. On this day, your dress your avatar up according to the color of the year you first joined Gaia. For example, if you joined in April of 2006, and the list says 2006's color is green, put green clothes on your avatar. Get it? Got it? Good. The colors this year will be the same as last, for those of you who participated before, and red is making a return for both our 2003 oldbies and our 2013 newbies. Have at it!
Note: Some years we've had a bit of trouble with people getting unreasonably competitive about their classes. So this year, we're asking everyone to include a rainbow of some kind on your class color day outfits, to show our unity, and appreciation for the other classes.

You may be wondering, how do I know what year I joined? Well, just click right here! The siglab will tell you the exact date you joined Gaia. :] What if you had an account before this, but it got hacked or banned or some such? No problem. Just dress up in the year you joined Gaia, not the year your account was created.

Remembrance Week

We decided to do something a little bit different, something special this year. After Gaia Spirit Week, we'll be hosting one extra week to bring back some of our most popular themes from past years! We hope everyone will stick around for a trip down memory lane (or welcome some of you in to days that you might have missed before you joined us), but if not, we hope you enjoyed this year's Gaia Spirit Week! Here are the days we'll be bringing back:

[ { Sunday the 14th } ]
[ { Cosplay Day } ]
Dress up like someone from a various form of media, be it a video game, movie, anime, comic...you see where we're going with this? Are you a closet fan of something you wouldn't admit to offline? Perfect! Show your love for your favorite character (or characters, since you don't have to pick just one cosplay throughout the day) and see if anyone else can guess just who it is you are dressing as.

[ { Monday the 15th } ]
[ { Twin Day } ]
The hallmark of high school Spirit Weeks everywhere, Gaia Spirit Week is bringing backTwin Day. Or more-than-twin day. Dress identically to someone else, or multiple someone elses. This can go as far as the same skin and hairstyle, or can mimic the poor job of matching most high school friends do. Don't have any Gaian friends to match up with? Check out this thread! We're sure you'll find a willing volunteer.

[ { Tuesday the 16th } ]
[ { Pokémon Day } ]
What kind of pokémon are you? How do you do the things you do~ Mimic your favorite pokémon! We've all got one, so we want you to dress like it! This can be a hard one since your avi isn't really pokémon shaped, but there are enough items on Gaia, we've got faith that you lot can do it successfully! Need some help finding a good Pokémon? Bulbapedia can help; you can even search by color. Or, if you aren't feeling the whole pokémon thing, you can dress as a trainer, or even one of the other people you come across on your journey!

[ { Accessories Day } ]
The only rule is that you may only wear accessories! Simple, right? Wear anything you want, so long as it came out of the accessory tab in your inventory. Have fun!

The rules are simple: dress up only as an item that has an "I Am" or "You are" pose! Don't know what items have these options, click this for a list of the items.

For this day, we're letting you pick for yourself what theme you'd dress for today. This is open to not only days from the past years, but this year's Spirit Week as well. You don't have to pick just one, but you also don't have to prepare a bunch of outfits. Remember, just have fun and experience (or for quite a bit of us, re-live) this blast from the past.

Rivalry between the classes and get pretty intense sometimes, and so to facilitate that we've got the class competition. People take pride in their classes, and they tend to declare that loudly to other spirit weekers. So each year the mods get together and pick the top three classes who demonstrated their awesomeness the best, and we give them trophies. And, of course, bragging rights. How can you help your class win? Participate in everything! Show your dedication to your class and claim your pages! Be spirited like no other! Do everything to the extreme!

In the past we've seen some pretty outstanding Gaians come through GSW. People who go way above and beyond what they have to for GSW. That might include organizing Towns events, chatting in the thread a lot, motivating people for Class Color Day, sending in photos, donating, or any number of other things. Surprise us! We here at the Spirit Week have decided to run easily the most cliche contest; a raffle. Want to enter? It's easy. One ticket costs 100 gold. Just send I r Spirit Week a trade request with the proper amount of gold. You know, 100 gold for one ticket, 200 for two, et cetera. You can buy as many raffle tickets as you want! Title your trade request 'I Wants Raffle Ticket Now'. We will assign you a random number and then, at the end of Spirit Week, we'll hold a random drawing using the random number generator. Don't worry about getting the numbers for your tickets, we keep track of it for you. Disclaimer: You can only win a maximum of one prize in the raffle contest. The Raffle Contest will end at 11:59PM EST on July 13th, and winners will receive their prize some time on sunday. So be sure to send in a trade any time before that!

This contest will require a bit more dedication than the others, but it’s pretty easy if you have an organized group, though it isn't necessarily required! The basic gist of this contest is: gather one member from each class and form a rainbow of posts of the class colors in the order of join year, starting with '03 and ending with '13. There will be a few conditions to prevent cheating: You are not allowed to delete posts if someone posts out of order. So if the page your group started/ended on both have less than 15 posts, it will be invalid. (However, since there’s only eleven classes, you just need eleven posts in a row in the right order). Once your group has posted, send a PM to I r Spirit Week appropriately titled "Rainbow Contest Entry" and telling us what page you started/ended on. This contest is only in effect on Class Color Day (Saturday, July 13th)! First group to accurately have their party posted in the correct order in this year's thread wins a super secret prize! Keep in mind that people may unintentionally (or intentionally wink ) ruin your chain, so if this happens just start over and keep trying! REMEMBER, only eleven different people count as a group. ONE PERSON FROM EACH CLASS. NO MULES.

Q: Why don't the Class Colors match the sashes Gaia gave out?
A: For a couple of reasons. When we first stared doing GSW, Gaia hadn't released the sashes yet, and when they did release them, most people didn't want us to change the colors - they liked the tradition behind the colors, and they liked being able to make a rainbow. We decided that for now, we won't change the colors. Besides, not everyone has one of the sashes, or the right sash.
If you want to wear your sash anyway, go for it! You won't be alone, lots of other people like to wear their sashes as well as the colors we assign, and that's totally fine. Show your spirit the way you want to!

Q: When do screenshots take place?
A: Screenshots can occur whenever enough users want them to occur. In the past, we've had complaints from people missing screenshots, either because they didn't know, or because they were in a different timezone, etc. This year, the moderators will be holding "official" screenshots based on the following schedule:

July 6th: 11:30PM Gathering for opening screenies (In Friendchat)
July 7th: 12AM Opening Ceremony/Screenies (In FriendChat)
12PM, 3PM, 6PM, 9PM, screenies
July 8-12th: 12AM Screenies + Avvie Contest Winners announcement (On Days where it applies)
12PM, 3PM, 6PM, 9PM, screenies
July 13th: 3PM, 6PM, 9PM Screenies
11:30PM Closing Ceremonies Gathering/Screenies (In New Friendchat), Overall Winner + Class Winners Announcements
Remembrance Week: TBA, this may just be more relaxed and/or spur of the moment.

At least one of our moderators should be present for each of these times. Despite the schedule, if you're online and want to organize your own group, feel free to do so!

Q: You mentioned timezones. What time zone do we follow?
A: Since most of the moderators are in Eastern United States, the official GSW time is the Eastern Daylight Time Zone. You can use this time converter for help!

Q: When does a day start/end?
A: The day starts at 12AM EDT, and ends at 11:59 PM EDT. If you plan on entering the avatar contest, it HAS to be sent within the day's theme.

Q: How do I know what year I joined Gaia?
A: You can check here! The siglab will tell you the exact date you joined Gaia.

Q: What if I had an account before this, but it got hacked or banned or some such?
A: We usually suggest that you go with the year you originally joined, but you can choose to support which ever you'd like.

Q: I keep seeing people saying they claimed this page. What does that mean?
A: Page claims are a little tradition we have. If you have the first post on a page (and only the first post), edit the post and claim it for your class! If the first person doesn't edit their post/doesn't claim the page, don't worry about it, just let it go. This is just for fun! Speaking of traditions, another tradition is to wear a single rainbow item on Class Color Day to represent class unity.

Q: I see people wearing the Halloween 2k12 Mourning Armband. Why is that?
A: When the news about Varlot's passing found us shortly after it happened, a lot of us wanted to wear something in her memory. The armband was suggested in this thread and we all agreed that it was a great idea. You are more than welcome to wear yours as well, though it is not required.

Q: Why are people telling me to remove the background item from my avatar?
A: While taking screenshots, background items tend to take up a lot of space, and it's usually a bit difficult to work around them. It's not required, but please consider taking them off when in towns or the friendchat while we're taking screenies so that everyone can be noticed in the shot.

Q: I want to help out! Can I donate anything?
A: Donations are fine, but definitely not required! Gold is preferable, but we'll accept whatever you'd like to donate. Just be sure to label the trade!

Q: Why was my trade canceled?
A: We try to send a PM asking why a trade was sent if it isn't labeled, but during GSW it can get a little crazy, and we'll end up just canceling it if it isn't labeled. If you're donating, label it "Donation", or if you're entering the raffle contest, label it "I want Raffle Tickets!" If we do cancel it feel free to resend it with a title!

For those of you who are just joining us this year, or for those of you that keep coming back, you might be seeing a bit of a change in moderators. These two ladies right here were the ones that started organizing Gaia Spirit Week the last five years and are the official founders for the event. They brought the message of unity and comradery to us, even if we knew of it already. They brought us an event year after year that was a lot of fun for all to enjoy and while it may have been a bit stressful on their end, we know that they wouldn't trade it for anything when we all would thank them for putting in so much hard work.

Now, this news I'm about to share with you all might be a bit of a shock. Varlot, our ever-loving lady in red, was in a car accident on New Year's Eve and we regret to inform you that she didn't make it through the accident. It was a shock for all and very disheartening, to say the least. While we are all sad for her loss, we all know that she would like for us to be strong for her and keep the tradition alive. Just because she, Varlot, isn't with us physically, she's still here with all of us and wishing us well. Maybe even raining down some rainbows on us all.

Shieran is alive and well, but has stepped down from doing moderator work for the event. All we can add is that we understand and respect her decision, since her drive to help run the event was affected by the loss of Varlot.

We ask that all questions or concerns towards GSW be sent to the moderators in the next post or to I R Spirit Week.
