The Gaian Theatre Company (GTC) is a project dedicated to exploring the concepts of live theater in the context of Gaia Towns. Through the cooperation of directors, designers, and actors, over the course of a month we plan out, cast, rehearse, and perform a show for live audiences. We have successfully put on over 20 different productions and nearly 100 individual performances over two and a half years.

In June of 2008, almost exactly two years after our first live performance, we became the first recipient of Gaia's Community Spotlight. Thanks Gaia HQ! heart

In the posts below, you can find out information about our show in progress and how you can get involved -- we always need new additions to our company.

Please keep posts in this thread related to the GTC. For off-topic chatter, post in the Off-Topic board in the guild.

Come See Us!

There are many things the audience can do to make a performance go much smoother. We bring up our biggest requests before every performance, but here we'd like to give you a more comprehensive list:

  • Stay off the stage! Gaia homes consist of the home itself and a deck-like area surrounding the home. The home itself is our stage, and the audience should sit on the deck. When you walk in you may see people on the stage -- these are usually actors or other people associated with the GTC and not an invitation for you to walk on. (After the curtain call is over, however, you're welcome to come up if you wish)

  • Quiet in the theatre! Talking is welcome before and after the show, as well as during intermission, but please refrain during the show. There are a variety of reasons for this: it's rude, it also contributes to lag (which is our enemy), it distracts the other audience members, and adds unexpected text into the chat box which can throw off the actors. If you come in late or have to leave early, please do so silently!

  • Audience Reaction (is encouraged!). We ask you not to talk in the theatre, but feel free to react with emoticons! If there's a joke, you can laugh, or a sad scene, cry! Audience reaction to the material lets us know you're not idling and that motivates us to perform better.

  • "Applause" and the curtain call. At the end of the show, a cast member or another person affiliated with the GTC will come to the front of the stage and conduct the curtain call. Like in a real show, we love and appreciate your "applause" -- even if you didn't like the show or the performance, we appreciate kind reactions at the curtain call to know that the effort we put into the show is appreciated.

ABOUT SENDING FLOWERS/GIFTS/ETC TO THE CAST:

General messages and things to an entire cast can be PMed to [O.G.] and can then be passed on to that entire cast.

To send items or other things to a particular cast arrangement or cast member(s) you saw, consult the LJ for posted cast lists for particular nights, or inquire after a certain performance's cast list by PMing [O.G.] smile

Frequently Asked Questions
UPDATED: 10/14/09

I have a suggestion for a show you should do...
Comment on our suggestion thread here.

How do I become a part of this?
For acting roles, we hold auditions. To help us with non-acting tasks (of which there are plenty), you can volunteer for different "backstage" groups at our guild.

I signed up to be on a costume notification list a long, long time ago - why haven't I been contacted?
... we lost the list. Sorry about that, there was a LOT of chaos that June sweatdrop Now we have better organized tasks like that at our guild.

I friended [O.G.] -- why haven't I been friended back? / I want to be on your newsletter mailing list / I am or was on the mailing list but haven't received any newsletters lately
OG has over 1000 friends requests, and even if there was an easy way to sort through all those people, sending out the newsletter the old-fashioned would be very time consuming. We are no longer accepting friends requests on the account or sending out newsletters as a result -- sorry about that! You CAN, however, follow us on Twitter, join our guild, etc. to get notifications about GTC activities -- links are in the first post.

Can I affiliate with you?
If you run a theater or Towns-related thread or project, PM [O.G.] to discuss affiliation.

If I audition and am cast, do I need to buy my own costume?
No. If you become a part of our cast we expect you to use the accounts we supply you with, wearing the costumes they are supplied with.

How did you get featured (TWICE)?
Some Gaia staff became aware of our project and apparently liked it wink We had no involvement other than... being here.

Is the GTC run by Gaia staff/part of Gaia HQ?
Not at all. We're just ordinary users for the most part and we get no special perks.

Can't anyone just audition and steal stuff from your mules...?
We are well aware of the risks we take to make theater on Gaia quality and convenient for all involved.

Are the actors/GTC staff paid?
Only with the joy of seeing you entertained.

Who is [O.G.]?
Just the general account for the GTC.

Who started this thing?
Arqueete, Cascara, Patta, N00dl3s, and Goodtoady.

What is the Sphere Theatre?
The Sphere Theatre is the name of the house we usually perform in (58 Barton 001221), often just referred to as "the theatre". It is also the name the GTC uses anywhere outside of Gaia (Twitter, Livejournal, YouTube) and the name of our guild.

What are the criteria for canceling a show?
We tend to take a majority vote among actors on whether to cancel when technical difficulties make it too impractical to start the show or we have no audience.

What does it matter who's in what role if you're reading off a script anyway/why do you need to audition people?
There is a certain level of professionalism and smooth operation that the GTC tries to maintain and has limited rehearsal time to teach to a large group of people. As a result, we have to try and weed out people who don't follow directions well, aren't yet at a level we need them to be for a certain skill level (such as typing speed), or we suspect won't show up or won't get along well with the other people we wish to cast. Just like in real life, certain actors do a better job of getting across the subtleties of a certain kind of character or are at different skill levels and based on these factors we decide roles.

How do I donate to the GTC?
Send a trade to [O.G.]. Thank you very much for thinking about us! smile

The new home is warm and cozy, I think. I just procrastinated my lab report some more read the new reserved posts and harts to Arq. ^__^ I can't believe the GTC has come to be what it is today. Like, I remember when we were all "LOLOL OMG LET'S DO A SCENE FROM PHANTOM IN TOWNS LOLOL" And then we did it. And then we did Cabaret. And it just grew from there. And it's STILL growing. All the new actors we've gotten, it's like a big cyber family that sometimes runs around in its underwear and humps each other (but it's okay because we aren't REALLY related).

*tear* C'mon guys. Group hug.
