Welcome to Gaia! ::

That is ******** hilarious.

God, China has problems...

I'm female though, and I play as a female, so it wouldn't affect me, but if it happened here?

I'd s**t bricks and throw them at Gaia HQ.

I think that huge psychotic BS rule is just a product of the culture. Gaia wouldn't do that here, they'd get SO much s**t for it.
Well, if that happened here, I'd be pretty ********. I don't think Gaia would ever do that to us without getting their headquarters burnt down by an enraged Gaian. xD
What the ******** are we transexuals upposed to do? Im not gonna play as a guy. Sorry, I hate this idea op.
Uh, what MMO would that be? And that person could just get a female friend to stand in front of a webcam. Or even better just put on a long wig.

Obviously people would go apeshit if Gaia ever did that. rolleyes

China seems to be pretty tolerant of female androgyny. Note pop star Chris Lee, for example. But when males get into it, it seems like there is a very strong stance against it

...Most of Gaia's artists are females who use male avatars?
Of course this would never happen here. whee

Also, I question the validity of this story. I ran a search and it is posted on MANY many English gaming blogs, but none are the source. I cannot find it ANYWHERE published on an actual news site, the origin seems to be from JLM Pacific Epoch, which describes itself as "a boutique research house providing news and news translations on China technology, media, and telecom investment opportunities." What they really are is a glorified blog and they translate blurbs from Chinese sources, which may in fact be other blogs. There is not even a wikipedia entry for King of the World, the MMO in question.

When you run a search for "King of the World chinese mmo" you cannot even find the actual MMO. You only find mounds and mounds of sites like www.gamespot.com www.videogamer.com decrying how the Chinese are crazy fascists for doing this. I call shenanigans.
I would quit...

I don't have a web-cam.

That would be really stupid of them. I mean, they'd lose tons of players, I think. And players are money, and Gaia doesn't want to lose any of that, nu uh.

Many of Gaia's staff members use opposite gender avatars already, so it would be a little bit hypocritical for this rule to be implemented. (reapersun, gem2niki, etc...)
That's pretty damn terrible, it would effect me as my gaia quest pretty much depends upon me having a female avi.

The people i'd feel the most sorry for in that situation are those who suffer from Gender Disaphoria and so feel they were born the wrong gender so obviously they'd want to pick a opposite sex avatar but if they're not yet old enough to get a sex change then they obviously would be unable to "Prove" there sex as such and would be pretty humiliated and pissed off
Either way if gaia does implement this its easy to trick!

Just get a friend/girlfriend/sister to take your place in the webcam test
That's a dumb idea, and they only got away with it in China because it's China. Pretty sure is against some law or another in America.

Also, pretty sure a headshot photo of me wouldn't prove my gender either way. ._.'
Gossy

I think you have a point here.

I did some more digging and cannot find this supposed MMO at all.
That's retarded, and really, the only people who agree with this rule are people who cyber and don't want the "icky feelings", attached to cybering with someone of the same gender.

I would quit.

Wow, that's crazy. I've heard of China's strict laws with the internet and certain websites... but I still find news like this shocking.
If that happened on Gaia, or on any other website I belonged to, I'd probably think twice about my membership there.
That whole webcam method of proving one's sex seems too invasive, even if I don't have a problem carrying out the chore itself.
I don't like proving who I am... to people I really don't have any personal relationships with.
