But WoW is a horrible game.

Apparently lots...and lots of people around the world disagree. 3nodding

WoW is like a gateway MMO, like a gateway drug would be. The people who play WoW have not tapped into the hundreds of more interesting and cultivating underground MMOs out there, but eventually they will.

WoW is extremely bland, the community is just crap, the game mechanics suck, and the graphics are horrific. Not to mention, I've played some free MMOs that were very out there, interesting, and a LOT better than WoW.

WoW is just like it's name, it's a total SHOCK that it's this ungodly popular. Why? it's the only MMO that's really advertised. You don't see Archlord and Final Fantasy 11 being over-advertised, despite them being pretty much better overall games.

I'm sure there are better games -but I don't think WoW is horrible at all.
I've been playing WoW for over a year, and true - I don't have a an excessive amount of MMORPG experience, but I've been gaming since I could walk.

I have a lot of fun with WoW. I have no problems with the community, the graphics or the mechanics. It's been my experience that it just keeps improving.
It's popular because it's great entertainment. You can advertise all you want - but if I get there and the game is crap - I'm not going to stick around.

Who are you trying to convince here?

Of cousre the people who play WoW will eventually move on to bigger and better things. There are lots of online games such as WoW for them not to do that. Although, at the moment (and it has been this way for quite some time), WoW is still the best there is.

I'm not a fan of it, and I agree with you about the graphics and such. Even the game play is rather boring, but to say that WoW is not more of a success than Gaia is just being a denial (Not saying that you said that, I'm just speaking in general here).
Who wants to go find me the 2007 annual reports for Blizzard Entertainment (WoW's maker), or if that doesn't work their parent company Vivendi Universal Games, or THEIR parent company Vivendi Universal. Somehow I doubt they'll have the same cash flow problems, or net income as Gaia. Even scaled to percentage size.

Can't go saying, "WE NEEDZ MOAR MONIES!!! WE NEED SPONZORSZ!" on one hand and then calling a long running business with more users and more revenue than you unsuccessful. Can't even imply it. Just makes you and yours look like asstards.

Sorry, Mr. Sherman, but you need to be more careful about what you say to the media, the bankers, and the investment analysts. It has ways of coming back to the community who might be rather ticked at it.

Seems to me that this is just another reason why they'd put the MMORPG first, because they want to try and be bigger than WoW, which won't even happen, to say the least. Even if Gaia is free, most mmorpgs players go for the 3D effects and many other elements to a game that Gaia won't even be bringing to the table. This article disturbs me, as it just gives Gaia a bad name. =/

WoW is as large as it is because it's been so largely advertised. If you're a person seeking an adventure but don't know how to find it you're told on TV, in magazines, everywhere. Generally the more intuitive MMOs are underground, and therefore they do not have the funds for such mass advertisement, which is why you only hear about WoW in commercials and such.

guys, the people who dont like WoW cannot afford it, plain and simple. There is currently no better MMO out there. And trust me Gaia's MMO wont be any better. The only MMO that has a chance is warhammer, which isnt out yet. . .flame me, go ahead.

I rarely post in this forum, or any for that matter, but on this I have to disagree. Having played World of Warcraft since the month of it's release, and also having played, EQ, EQ2, City of Heroes and Villians, D&D Online, Ragnarok, Lord of the Rings Online, FlyFF, Fiesta, Maple Story and Dream of Mirror Online, I can safely say NONE, not ONE of those games comes even remotely close to being as good as WoW.

While EQ2 is an amazing game, the fact that you can run through zone after zone and not see one other player kills it. There is no socialization at all. Why? The sheer lack of players.

City of Heroes/Villians is also amazing for it's own reasons, but running the same missions over and over again gets boring, quickly.

D&D Online was just a big joke. Same with LOTRO.

FlyFF, MapleStory, Fiesta, and Dream of Mirror don't even compare. They are all fun, and cool, you get to whack little mushrooms in the head, but seriously? With the insane amount of lvls in these games, and games like it, how is this fun? Grinding and grinding for hours on end, and for what? So you and the 2 other players with enough time to reach lvl 3,573 can stand around and look oh so cool in your Cosmic Armor or something. *Edit* Also, none of these games are actually FREE to play. They all have a cash shop, and to get anywhere in the game, you need to spend all the money you can in it.

WoW is popular because it targets lots of people. Casuals, Hardcore players, PvPers, and just about everything in between.

Also, did I mention that almost ever single one of the games I have mentioned has tons and tons of loading screens. Between every zone and city. WoW has very few.

Should I also mention how much it actually cost to MAKE World of Warcraft?

Let me start this off by saying I am not a fan of WoW, by any means.

The fact that the person who is supposed to be the CEO of this company represents this website as something completely alien to what Gaians view it as is a big deal. This is not merely stupidity, but shows just how vastly the view from 'above' differs from ours, and consequently, how different their view of the future of Gaia probably is. I know a few of the older administrators are upset with the way things have been snowballing and are trying to correct this, and we as users support them one hundred percent in their efforts, but I'm afraid that won't be enough of an incentive alone to change the course of Gaia.

Things like this make me wonder if I should still be here.

well I should rephrase that, if you just dont like MMOs, or other games of that nature you have an excuse, I suppose.

I really admire Mr. Sherman's standards, it's definitely one that calls for looking ahead and seeing as to how much untapped resources there are in the industry. Parallels to the thinking behind the Wii and Microsoft Windows anyone?

I'm afraid as to what it means for Gaia, though. I don't really want that many people running around here just because I'm afraid of Gaia becoming more addicted to money. Pretty soon, I really won't be able to keep up at all.

Wow, thanks for the generalization there. But at least you said "currently", meaning that you at least have allowed for the fact that there is the possibility of a better one coming out.

And actually, I would think that most people who actually could afford it wouldn't be playing WoW...

Ok, the very fact that Mr. Sherman responded here to attempt to clarify what he meant, and the fact that staff in general are responding to these recent threads about Gaia's direction, means that it is an issue to them. If it wasn't, they wouldn't bother and it would be "suck it up guyz". The fact that it is an issue is, to me, the most important thing. When anything we have to say ceases to be that, then we really have something to fret about. The rest is just details. Mr. Sherman is still on a learning curve about Gaia as we know it, just like a new user takes quite a while to really get to know Gaia. He appears to be open to every kind of feedback, so let's corrupt teach him. Might be better than slice and dice.
