"WoW v.s. Gaia?"
At the recent MI6 confrence, the world's largest video game marketing conference, a discussion panel featuring the MMO business models and the potential growth of free-to-play MMO games in the future, had Craig Sherman, who is the CEO of Gaia Interactive, among the speakers, was quoted stating that World of Warcraft's 10 million subscribers is not a "real" success.

His original quote was: "There are 800 million teens in the world. That's not a success." - A success for Sherman would be to at least have 10% of those 800 million people, who he believes would like to take part in an on-line game such as a MMO.


Is this just being big headed or what? Do you honestly believe that Gaia MMO is going to have a bigger impact than WoW has had on teens across the world? I dunno, I guess that's for you to decide.
It seems he is oblivious to the fact that among these 800million teens in the world, more than half of them most likely don't even have access to a computer/ the internet or are able to afford the subscription fees (or no access to WoW itself).

My main problem about all of this is the misrepresentation Craig is splurging around about Gaia, creating the impression of something it's not and subsequently causing some rifts. Has he cared to see the amount of users who play WoW on site? I'm sure he'd be somewhat surprised.
As someone else said, in the most professional and dignified manner he would've been better to hold his tongue than say something that may compromise the view of the site, and external affluence.

That comment seems wrong on an epic scale, especially out of context.

All 800 million teens (Assuming that value is even close to being correct), don't even have computers. And many adults play that game too. I used to.

He's right in a sense, but he should have worded i differently. Because it IS a success, if you don't play it, you most definitely at least know about it. You cant really say the same for gaia. pirate

I kind of agree with you.

I suppose the Gaia aim is to appeal more to teenagers now as that's a larger sector of it's demographic at 80% I read? But there are adults here too.

Without any statistics from WoW in terms of how many teenagers play WoW (although, myself included), we can't judge how much of a "teenage" success it is as there are plenty of adults (perhaps even *more* I'd guess) who indulge in the game also.

Craig said something once along the lines of:

WoW is pay to play and WoW doesn't help hack victims

and gaia does, and its free cool

More KIDS play than teens anyway. It's why the Alliance sucks so much. f**k, I hate being alliance half the time because of the shitheads I played with.

What's with Gaia and these fight pickings? First using memes as items which pissed off 7chan (not 4chan), now saying wow wasn't a success? Good god, this CEO is a pompous d**k head, even more so than 4chan's owner.
