I haven't RPed anywhere in years, but...
1) It let me explore being who I wanted to be, rather than being stuck in the "role" others expected of me.
2) It was fun (and sometimes crazy), and I had some good friends back then, whom I still miss at times.
3) It gives you a measure of control over things that you don't get in reality, which is a relief when you get fed-up with things going wrong in real life.
4) As a writer, it was a way to gauge how other people would respond to the characters I created.
5) I enjoyed the mental exercise.

Writing is more exciting when you don't know what most of the characters will do. Multiple people building on each other's creativity--it's fun. I get artistic inspiration from it, too.

I blame it all on the Breedables and Changing Pet forum.
It's all their fault.
Because normally I don't RP at all...
and then I got sucked into B/C....
and there it goes. D:

Thank you all so much for your responses so far. Please keep them coming, this is going a long way in helping me. I'd love to hear from more guys. Don't be shy dudes .x.

Because my friends who RP are here, haha. It's no better or worse than any other place with RP, though any place with a forum format definitely has an advantage because it's easier to follow what's going on. RP on twitter, tumblr, Facebook? Exercise in futility. xd

It's interesting you bring that up. I know some people who purely RP on tumblr. What DI you find the pros and cons to be in your personal experience with micro blogging RP?

Breedables and Changing Pets Forum
Originally it used to be just about adopting pets which grew over time.
But as Gaia grew there was a lot more people coming in with new ideas.
So from just adopting pets like cats, dogs and horses.
People started selling or allowing human characters to be adopted.
So much so...that it's basically almost like an RP world
is created in a thread...and you would gain/make a character
for that RP world. Some are sold (since most of the B/C threads
are shops) but there are a lot of events that also allow you to get
free characters.

These characters ALL get art that grow as you RP or as time
passes. You get characters that normally come as child, then
may grow into teen and then adult, all with art stages.

Some shops also gets you job stages. Like when you first get
a character...you get it as normal citizen...and then (in one
sailormoon inspired shop) , they become a sailor girl...and
so on.

Each shop is a different world.
Some deal with animals, some with people...some
with popular fandoms like Harry Potter, Homestuck...
and so on. Basically yeah. Some are RP required:
meaning for your characters to get new growth art you
need to RP them. Some are not requiring only gold/cash or time
to pass.

Because I can connect with others.

My passion is writing and there's a level of engagement I get with others that I don't get to the same degree outside of it. I tend to feel lonely if I can't RP. It's odd.

I feel the same. There's a deep level of connection that can occur with RPs. Would you ever talk about your RPs in an English class? Or ever consider getting them published?

Wow. Learn something every day in the pockets of gaia. This is definitely very interesting. Thank you for sharing. Do you find the RP there is of a better quality than in Barton town?

I think most of the RP there is more original XD
since the shops are entirely different worlds.
A lot of the Barton Town RPs I know of tend to be cliche.
Aka you end up with anime bases characters, fandom
based characters or cliche situations like:
Demon romance Hunter, Vampire x Mary Sue girl/Gary Stu boy, or
school type romance-y things.

While you still get that in B/C there's a lot more originality and
space to explore new worlds. AND...you get art of your character
as he/she/it grows older which you don't have if you just RP in
Barton Town.

So yeah...typically I like B/C RPs better. XD
But you have to find the shop that fits you well the most.
Some are more strict with grammar, especially they very RP
heavy shops, but most don't really care how well you type
as long as you observe basic skillz that allows everyone
to read your RPs well. 8D

I'm actually working on a new project right now along that line, and professionally documenting the trajectory.

'Interactive fiction' in a social context. I wrote a bit about it on my blog. There's a link in my sig. /shamelessplug

I roleplay because I enjoy writing and creating characters. Roleplaying is a way for me to take what I'm passionate about and bring it into a social context. I met one of my best friends in a roleplay and while I don't roleplay as much as I used to (I'm typically too busy with work and college classes to do so), I still enjoy a good roleplay immensely.

Not that there isn't something to be said about writing a story by yourself, too. It can be liberating to take the reigns of a story into your own hands and shape it as you see fit.

RP for me is a fun way to pass the time. Make friends, discuss interesting stories, play whatever character I want, etc. I enjoy writing and creating but writing alone isn't very fulfilling to me.

So I'm here with my friends and we have a blast.

(Also RP is a free hobby and I'm broke as hell ;v)

I used to RP elsewhere...
but I haven't worked up the courage to RPing here on Gaia. o///o
I'm just
too shy or something
I don't know.
Also everyone in the RP forums have giant pictures and post formats with song lyrics/sayings/whatever so it gets hard to understand.
I do WANT to try RPing here on Gaia, I just...
haven't/can't/I don't know
