Welcome to Gaia! ::

I know I'm asking for it. But I've been a simi-para role player since 2003, and that is how I met my lover, was through role play. I really never did the one liner, and I never liked it. - Well recently I've seen a lot of people calling it "Stupid" and calling people who do it "retarded" Just because you dont' like it doesn't mean there's not people out there who doesn't. - Role Play means everything to me... again that is where I met my life mate and that's how I escaped from the physical and emotional abuse I was going though with my father. In my mind I could transport myself any where, I could be anybody I wanted to be. I was writing, and that is saying something because I never really learned how to spell because of my ADHD. Now, I can compare myself to how I was back when I was still in school, and I see a big improvement. It has done more good for me then anything else... Honest to god.... And I don't see hardly any more role players, and I mean serious ones, no just the ones who post a movie star's picture up and they say "How are you" NOT that kind.... that annoys me...

But I mean the ones who at least makes a after to wrote a couple paragraphs or more? Lately all I see is hate.... and instead of name calling, why not express yourself, if you really dislike something that bad there is a reason.... if you want you can explain, if you don't want to you don't have to. And there's nothing wrong with being geeky or nerdy. there's nothing wrong with being a outcast and being "normal" is over rated. But has anyone ever role played? Because, I just noticed it had died off, right before it was took over by kids who didn't know what they were doing, so I dropped it. I'm not trying to start a war but does anyone understand what I'm talking about?

And this might be off the topic but does anyone Cosplay?

Roleplay belongs in the roleplay forums or the chatterbox, or roleplay guilds.

one reason why people hate on roleplay here is because a lot of people try to do it in places where it simply does not belong.

Well my dislike for roleplay that's taken control in the past 5 years is that it's become filled with low literacy, and generally people who don't know how to RP in the first place.

Maybe I'm an elitist, but.. I just don't like where roleplaying has gone in the past couple of years, and it's not just on Gaia, it's almost internet-wide that this is/has happening/happened

Yes. But discussion on your attitude toward it, it's participants, your history and exposure to the people themselves... That's very community oriented, isn't it?.

This. And on top of this, from what I've seen, a lot of the people trashing roleplay seem to do it because they've had bad experiences with RPers themselves. Honestly, some roleplayers can be REALLY bad: god modding, Mary Sue characters that break the rules of the RP, piss-poor literary skills, one line posts, trying to force romance and sex in it even though it has nothing to do with the plot and doesn't even affect character development...

Back in the day, people used to act out their characters while also discussing a topic. Note that the topic was one that wasn't really important or brought up an issue. They were seen as folks who gave a sort of depth to the Gaian world and also inspired people to be as them, since often the forum would grow cold.

My opinion, two cents, clams, w/e: Roleplaying is cool n all, and can be used as a device in the GCD corresponding to a topic that isnt that serious. Certain threads no, Fan Harems a go.
I've honestly never seen any major flax towards Roleplayer/Roleplaying. I've seen people bash or get angry at certain types of roleplayers/roleplays such as extreme romance, sex threads, and poorly written ones that make no sense.

Not as actual topics of discussion just mentioned in passing. But I've never read anything against the practice in general.

But maybe I'm just not "looking" in the right places.

I can understand some people dislike of Roleplay, its just not their thing.
Outside of event and plot fun, which totally got me to stick around the site when I came back in 2007, in character fun should be kept out of discussions pertaining to serious things and most Gaia based topics. That's part of the reason why so many people aren't fond of role-players. The other part comes from the fact that most people who run role-plays in Barton Town aren't interested in creating a world where the plot is driven by the people playing in it. They just want their characters with their plot played out their way and doctored up art found on a Google search or some Japanese artist's website with a rainbow of text all worked up just so. It's no longer your characters with your ideas but rather you becoming a puppet of the person running the RP. Barton Town is just a place where a lot of younger members want to play out their romantic fantasies now.

It's how a lot of the RPs are being run with their ridiculous requirements to even be considered for a game like finding a word in white somewhere so you can quote it in order to be accepted that irk a lot of people lately.

I don't cosplay but I used to love roleplaying. Its what brought me to gaia. But due to the fact that there haven't been any good role plays I stopped years ago.
I've been on Gaia for years, and I really only drop by to scout for a decent roleplayer every couple of months. I'm unsure what would cause someone to be at all hateful of roleplaying, unless they had bad experience with little bratty godmodders or were one themselves and were ushered out of threads for their stupidity.
Roleplaying is great! I believe that Gaia's roots and foundation was as an avatar community/roleplaying site. Aren't we all roleplaying as our avatars on Gaia anyway? It only becomes annoying when someone barges into a discussion thread going *I sneak in through the ceiling and lick you as I steal all your cookies.*

For me, it's not really the lack of good RPs, but simply that a handful of big ones just dominate the forums. I'll spend a long time typing up an RP, only for it to get knocked off page one in thirty seconds. If I'm lucky, I'll get ONE person to join, but it's hard to keep an RP going with just two people. Even the recruitment forum is no good because the many OOC threads bump everything else down just as quickly as the main forum. If you want to do an RP in Barton Town, you have to choose between the big threads that usually boil down to zombies, vampire school, slave and master, or X versus Y. You wanna make your own, you better have a ton of people already lined up to join.

I didn't know there was a lot of rp hate. I must admit I am not a fan of role players who steal art for their characters. In fact, I make it a point to join rp sites where that is prohibited so I don't have to worry about it rubbing me the wrong way. Since I am over 18 I also only like to go on sites with age limit of 18 and up. I don't want to get in an overly gory or mature rp with underage runts. No offense to all the young-ins out there.

Thats another reason why I stopped to, or when I would find a good RP with a good amount of people and then all they do is 1x1 and ignore the other people.

Gah, hate it when people do that. cat_gonk I've looked for RP guilds but can't really find what I'm looking for. Most are too specific for what I'm searching for, like based on a certain series or having to take place in a school setting or whatever. Seriously considering starting one of my own, a broader one geared towards "general fantasy". (basically, anything fantasy would be welcome)
