Welcome to Gaia! ::

Pretty much what everyone says;
Newbies = good.
Noobs = bad.
They overlap because noobs don't really last long; they either leave because they don't have the attention span to follow the rules and/or enjoy the site, or they wise up and become contributing members.

YourAzureGoddess

You can get called a noob in the exchange forums for bidding too low or being worth less than several million gold... where as in other forums you can be worth only a few k gold and look just fine.

Huh? I frequent the exchange, none of my outfits are worth over 1.5 mil (even less when I first started going there) and I have never been called a noob nor have I seen anybody being called a noob even when it was warranted.

IMPO: Noob are just unfunny and unsuccessful trolls. They have the ability to read and understand how things work around here but they don't care.

Well certainly you seemed to have a bad experience as a 'newb', which is obviously short for newbie.

But for me a noob is someone is insist on being ignorant and like to troll/spam/annoy you for their pleasure or someone who just insist on doing something wrong without acknowledging it

I've been called noob too, on my first days in gaia because of my avatar.
I have a number on my name too but I have never changed the username ^^

Noob is just someone new for me. If I would ever say it to someone it'd be for teasing them =) Not to act superior as they did to me back then.

To me:

Newb/Newbie: Someone who is new to Gaia, usually has decent spelling and grammar (or at least tries), and tries to post in the right places (and if they post in the wrong place they're generally apologetic or polite when guided to the correct place). Usually has legitimate questions about how to use the site, that sort of thing. They will learn from the mistakes they make.

Noob: Someone who uses chatspeak, begs, posts mostly in the wrong places even after being pointed to the right places. Will often spam. Sometimes will troll. Doesn't usually learn from their mistakes and will attempt to insult those who point them in the right direction.

I will talk to newbs/newbies. I prefer to ignore noobs (and report them if they're breaking the rules).

To me a noob is someone who simply keeps on doing stupid things even after he's been explained the rules or internet ettiquette. Could be the same as an idiot. Not to be confused with troll who does stupid things on purpose to get a reaction.

To me it's a rather unspecified insult, often used inconsiderately by people who just feel the need to be offensive without giving thought to cause or repercussion. Is there even a conventionally accepted definition that is a bit clearer than something within the range of newcomer to moron?

Someone who is new to the site and doesn't quite understand how to do things. They ask for gold. Their posts are frequently off topic or misplaced.

That's how I label a noob. It's short for newbie, so I think of newbies. 3nodding

Don't let people get you down! It doesn't matter if your outfit costs 10k or 100k. What matters is what you like.

The GD is a very NASTY place, one Latvian trolled me for being an Armenian.

now on topic: a noob (as well as the leet speak derivative n00b) is someone who will never improve on his user behavior and will always suck. The avatar is just a frame that represents a user, it is what's on the inside that counts and everyone gets judgmental (like that protagonist in the Catcher in the Rye).

Don't worry, you'll get there in a little while.

Not saying you will, just saying you could depending on what you post and who is present. Point isn;t that the exchange is a bad nasty place, but that not only do different forums have vastly different views on what constitutes a noob, but they also have vastly different views on 'what is a baseline of wealth' of Gaia.

aka, some forums are richer than others, and some have notable styles that you only learn through playing/posting.

Oops, quite right! They slip through now and again. Well, in our defence, the word still hasn't been entirely defined. surprised

Somebody who begs for gold, yhu no... tlks lyk dis, is rude. People I perceive as noobs before knowing them would be those with names like xXX_gofficgurl6534_XXx and so on. I've known maybe one person that had numbers on their name that wasn't a complete noob. Maybe just my luck, but yeah numbers on a name and xxxunderscore names usually have nooby people behind them.

EDIT:
My bad, guess I posted in a necro'd thread.

I'm not saying otherwise, I just have never seen anybody in the Exchange call anyone else a noob. The most I've seen is discrimination over post count, and only because I've seen that some thread titles have "ignore post count" in them.

I haven't been in the exchange in several months so I don't know the current mood of the forum. I do remember a time when some threads would get rather sassy if the serious exchangers felt that people were trying to shortchange/cheat/beg but all things change and quickly it seems, especially with the increasing site traffic.
