I never used adblock until recently when I saw an ad that was giving me an incessant pop up for a game. Basically, it would pop up a new tab every 10 seconds or so. Utterly ridiculous. I believe it was likely Gaia where I saw the ad as I was on my avatar dress up page when it suddenly popped up. Unfortunately, due to the fact I was lagging and hit refresh right as the ad popped up, I didn't get any screen caps to report it.

But since it was annoying the hell out of me, I got adblock just for the sake of that one ad. emotion_donotwant

I actually don't mind ads until they start being intrusive. I do feel bad because I know Gaia needs the revenue, but when ads start becoming intrusive to that degree, it's time to block them.
This. Popup ads, talking ads, they're both miserable and endlessly irritating. I am listening to music at full blast, I do not need some ad positively screeching in my ears about cursors or whatever spamware they want me to download.

The announcement was actually enough for me to give Gaia another chance, though. sweatdrop I have noscript installed, so I'm hoping it'll be enough to block the more intrusive ads while still supporting Gaia. Seeing as I've never bought cash ever.

I have no script too. I'm guessing this ad slipped through it because I have all Gaia pages fully allowed so they actually work properly. D= But I've been here for years and this is the first time I've ever had an issue with an ad on Gaia. I'm sure it was a fluke...but still so very annoying.

I'll likely turn adblock off in a few weeks to give the site another shot without it.
Funny, I haven't had any problems with the pages with noscript on. I actually blocked ads on Gaia years ago, so it's weird seeing banner ads everywhere again. Nostalgic really. xd

will you get banned if you block the ads?

No they can't ban you for blocking ads because they really can't tell who is using adblock and who isn't. The only thing they can do is tell who on the site has purchased enough items through the CS and letters and who is signed into AutoCash and has the "no outside ads" option turned on and look at past polls and threads they've had on the subject to gauge just what percentage of the user base isn't allowing ads to come into their browsers.

On the one hand, I want to support Gaia. On the other hand, you've got 20 tabs open, you're watching a video, and suddenly an ad on another tab starts talking.

They don't *need* me to leave adblock off badly enough, apparently.

Ill turn adblock on just for this pesky interactive ads.
Though, since I do my shopping online now, I get a lot of ads for SammyDress, which means less interactives.

If the Staff had a way to go through the packs and find which ads aren't suited for the site, I'd turn off my adblocker. Sadly, they rely on users to do that. So, I keep the adblock on.

I can understand Sisky's announcement. Sadly, I don't see the benefits of having adblock off right now.

That's pretty much my concern. I've got fed up with seeing one too many soft pornography type banner ads with "Sexy [Insert Race here] Women waiting to talk to you". I understand that advertising is an important form of revenue, but I don't want to be confronted with material like that, especially when looking at a site which is supposed to be suitable for those who are 13 years and up.

I know that they buy ad bundles, but I wonder how hard it would actually be to screen the ads first.

I wish they'd go back to the trialed system of text-based advertising. I rather enjoyed those and was happy to keep ads unblocked whilst they were using these. They were appropriate & unobtrusive.

I have ads unblocked for a lot of sites I support, and would do the same for Gaia in a heartbeat IF they didn't have some of the most obnoxious freaking ads I've ever seen. Sound, heavy duty animation, page-breaking...this site is image intensive enough and my computer isn't very good, the drop in load speed when I turn the ads on is drastic. I feel for them, I really do, but until they start screening that s**t a little better, the blocker stays on.

^ This pretty much right here, if the adds were static or only played when you clicked on them I'd not mind so much, but when you're on a page and the add covers up things, like links or text you're trying to read, makes annoy noises, keeps replaying, that's when it gets annoying.

Though I don't have add block, I use enough GC each month to be able to disable them, I do however have the adds viable on all of my mules.

This.
My biggest issue with their ads is how intrusive they are.
I used to always, always, always get ads on my dressup page that would pop-up when I would try to choose poses and what-not. They were ridiculous.

Gaia is the reason I got adblock.

Back when ads started showing up, I got a virus on my computer from them.

Since then, I've lost my trust in the site to ever remove the block. They can say what they want but unless they guarantee me a new computer after screwing mine over, then the answer is forever no.

Also, OP:
It's not ironic.

It's a cute coincidence that support each other. "We need money and please stop blocking our ads" paired with "here's something for you to give us money for!"

Twice Gaia has had issues with ads that will redirect me to another site that tries to force a virus on to my computer. These incidents happened a few years apart, too. Another thing many years ago I was redirected from a gaia page to a porn site and I'd just been idle there not clicking any links or anything. Yeah, no, Gaia I'm keep adblock on.

I've noticed that a lot of sites are getting clever and finding ways around adblock. Like CrunchyRoll, I used to not have any pre-video/mid-video ads but lately I've been getting a few.

Irony: The use of words expressing something other than their literal intention.

To quote Bender: "that's not ironic, it's just mean."

On topic: What's your point here? Gaia needs money to operate? Some ads are inappropriate?

Muscular Champion

On a side note, am I the only person who read the announcement kind of like a threat/bribe sorta deal?

"You don't haaave to view our ads, I mean, if you don't like items and having an up to date site."
