I logged on tonight, and I had 2 announcements.
The first is Gaia asking users to turn off their adblocks, saying that they need the revenue.
The second one? Yet another Cash Shop update! I don't have an issue with the frequency of Cash Shop updates, but I find it rather funny that here Gaia is saying how badly they need ad revenue and then BAM CS update!

-Do they really need users to stop using Adblock?
-Will/Do you?

Formal Elocutionist

I'm honestly surprised that the announcement was even made in the first place. Advertisements like that I was thinking would put Gaian's into a scare.

I don't use add block, but, on the other hand, I don't buy cash. So, it's a 50/50

First off, you have to understand that the timing of the second announcement was in no way coordinated with Sisky who made the first one. Sisky put out hers and the art department team making cash items happened to have their stuff ready to go and made their announcement. That said, I can kind of understand where Sisky is coming from with her plea to people to show ads. She's asking everyone even those of us who pay for cash and buy letters to make ads visible because they must have had a pretty bad set of numbers when it comes to ad revenue this past year. On top of that they're probably seeing a decrease in the number of people buying Gaia cards, Ultimate Game Cards, Zeevex Cards, Using Paypal for occasional cash, using Paypal for letters, and AutoCash subscriptions, which is why they need to supplement that income with ads.

Gaia is a business with employees it has to pay so whether through the Cash Shop, Partnerships, or Ads they have to get that cash some way or another to pay their workers.

Magic Hobo

On the one hand, I want to support Gaia. On the other hand, you've got 20 tabs open, you're watching a video, and suddenly an ad on another tab starts talking.

They don't *need* me to leave adblock off badly enough, apparently.

Inquisitive Bibliophile

I never used adblock until recently when I saw an ad that was giving me an incessant pop up for a game. Basically, it would pop up a new tab every 10 seconds or so. Utterly ridiculous. I believe it was likely Gaia where I saw the ad as I was on my avatar dress up page when it suddenly popped up. Unfortunately, due to the fact I was lagging and hit refresh right as the ad popped up, I didn't get any screen caps to report it.

But since it was annoying the hell out of me, I got adblock just for the sake of that one ad. emotion_donotwant

I actually don't mind ads until they start being intrusive. I do feel bad because I know Gaia needs the revenue, but when ads start becoming intrusive to that degree, it's time to block them.

Heart Tamer

They're not forcing anyone to disable adblock, just politely asking us to support the site by allowing ads. Do I think they're hurting badly for ad revenue? Not really. But that's simply my opinion, especially after seeing the crazy amount of sales on Black Friday.

Everyone is still free to keep ads disabled or enabled, however. It's a personal choice.
If their ads weren't so annoying more people might be prone to white listing them. Ads have gotten so much more obnoxious in recent years, namely the video ones. I don't want a video playing in my background and with as little as I let ads on, I always find one popping up here as I am trying to browse the site or click on something in my invo.

What ever happened to that rewards program they tried that at had incentives for leaving the ads up?

Mysterious Trickster

If the Staff had a way to go through the packs and find which ads aren't suited for the site, I'd turn off my adblocker. Sadly, they rely on users to do that. So, I keep the adblock on.

I can understand Sisky's announcement. Sadly, I don't see the benefits of having adblock off right now.

This. Popup ads, talking ads, they're both miserable and endlessly irritating. I am listening to music at full blast, I do not need some ad positively screeching in my ears about cursors or whatever spamware they want me to download.

The announcement was actually enough for me to give Gaia another chance, though. sweatdrop I have noscript installed, so I'm hoping it'll be enough to block the more intrusive ads while still supporting Gaia. Seeing as I've never bought cash ever.

Crumbly Codger

Errr, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there frequent CS updates *because* they're trying to bring in revenue? So by getting a percentage to allow ads on Gaia, they don't have to add things to the CS so frequently.

Time-traveling Senshi

To add to things, I've noticed lately that it seems Gaia has made it very difficult for someone to adblock anything, not even an image in a signature. I can't simply right click on any signature image now and block something that might be lagging things because it's a very large animated gif. I now have to open the blockable items box and hope that I can find the proper url to block and even then it's becoming difficult to find most signature images in larger threads now. I understand they want to get the per view revenue that these ads bring them but making it very hard to block pornographic images and any signature image that violates the rules of the site. There has to be some flexibility with how the adblock is allowed on the site.

will you get banned if you block the ads?

I have no script too. I'm guessing this ad slipped through it because I have all Gaia pages fully allowed so they actually work properly. D= But I've been here for years and this is the first time I've ever had an issue with an ad on Gaia. I'm sure it was a fluke...but still so very annoying.

I'll likely turn adblock off in a few weeks to give the site another shot without it.
