well don't forget, he seemed to hit terminal velocity really quickly... and it definitely wasn't falling at 80mph, which would cause the water to be the same as cement and instantly kill you... i think the acceleration due to gravity on gaia is probably somewhere around 1.1 m/s... or something else pretty slow... and it is possible to survive a large fall by landing in the water. my dad knows one of the few people who survived jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge, but he was a diver, so that pretty much explains how he survived...
