For me, it can sometimes depend on my mood. P: Though most of the time I'd just base it off of my own "shine factor" which is not necessarily based on what items it has on it but how nicely it stands out to me. smile The only time items affect the way I think is when it's an item I've been wanting but it costs a crap load... >.> Makes me want to baww a little bit.. gonk
I'm just gonna have to go with (practically) everyone else's views: It depends on someone's tastes, and matching matters more than money.

Although I do admit to trying to stick some of my items onto my avatar somehow. Not to show off, though, but because I feel like I have to use them or else I'm not using them to their full potential / it's a waste. I only use them if I can make them match, though. (as far as I can remember, at least. sweatdrop )

Also, your avatar is very nice. 3nodding

Hmm... I was just thinking... I wonder how users' avatars would change if there was no buying them involved, and everyone was free to use any item... but that's for a different topic. sweatdrop

Wow! that's great, can I make a topic using that?

I think it depends on the person
Me? I like flashy, matchy avatars. Lately I haven't been -so- obsessed with matching, but my favorite items are often my most expensive, so I tend to try to work them into it.
Your avatar is adorable and simple...two things that I fail at. xD

Wowowowowowowow!
Your avatar is so majestic and beautiful, however did you earn so much gold! Wow, you're so cool~ It's very rare to see so many expensive items used so well! How on earth did you earn millions and millions, you must have posted so much~ I tip my hat to you, Dakki-dono.
>w< You are too sweet. Thank you.
I did a lot of art in my time *points to sig* and a lot of my items are commission payments.
I did 8 pieces for a friend for these laurels, quested the horns, and my friend who was letting me borrow her d-tail told me I could have it if I did her some good art.
So I guess talent pays on Gaia. xD
But all of them I put my own work into and/or are from friends, so I like to wear them a lot.
It is important, though, to be able to put down your favorites and expensive items for the sake of an avatar. That's what makes the difference between someone who likes to use their best items and those who just want to show off. Sometimes I have my cheap and simpler days of experimentation. It's a good break from the norm.

Wow, if you draw like in your signature I can see why you are so rich @____@''
I, unfortunately can't draw, so I guess it's just posting for me~ I agree with you though, sometimes you can't have your precious shiny items, for the greater good.
Aw, well you can always try your hand at vending? It takes some practice, but it's not that difficult.

I'm terrible at it, but I know some people who make more than me off it. x-x;

There are times where you put them away for yourself, but I don't agree with not wearing them just because you feel "too rich" or "too elitist" or whatever.

I mean, they're your hard-earned items, ya know?

O Jeezus.
If everyone had access to every item for no price, do you know how much copying would be going on?
It would be a shitstorm to the nth degree.
And 63% of Gaia would be Naruto cosplays. :C

...
Didn't think about that... sweatdrop
Still, even though there would be more copying, there would be less "look at how expensive my items are". And some other stuff would change, too... but that would be derailing this topic. sweatdrop

I just like avatars that look good.
I don't think about the cost.
I just do it.
Usually outfits come to mind when I want to change my avatar. Some turn out great others.. meh. The one I have on now, I have been wearing 5 days straight! And that's a long time for me. It means I really love how my avi looks (I think the marionette is a bit much but, I still wanna show it off >w< ).
I can't really explain it but, if an avi matches my tastes then I like it! I got lucky with the marionette. I won it off a rig on my first try. So, of coarse I would like to show it off for a couple weeks. I don't know if that offends anyone that I got it based on luck but I'm happy getting it regardless.
If no "buying" or "earning" were involved in avatar making, I don't really think much would change other than the conversion of [old time expensive item] item piling to [fancy flashbomb] item piling. But maybe I'm just projecting myself on to others. I know that I'd still have gone for this gorgeous gown- even faster than I actually did.

Oh, and the fear of appearing to be a show-off would go away. The existence of which I think is silly, but that's a different subject.

I don't sit there and consider gold as an element of an outfit so much as I see it as an obstacle standing between me and that pretty item. For that reason, it's how an avatar works that makes me stop and stare.

Thing is- and it's a little hard to deny this: a lot of the interesting items, or distinct items that make building a character / theme / etc possible, tend to be the expensive ones.

Which is not to say it isn't possible (I think simple and charming is a good route, and I applaud cluttermatchers who work with common items); it's just a lot more difficult.

I used to frequent AT and Arenas. Not any more, though, because sometimes I like to create avatars that aren't strictly to their standards.
Like now. I'm just enjoying the beauty of certain items in themselves.

No wonder you're so proud of those items, you must've worked so hard.

If the avatar makes someone happy, who cares?

Not my place to thumb my nose at other people's taste.

I may not like it and may in fact find it downright ugly -- but I'd rather expend effort on my own avatar than worry over someone else's.

Seriously, it's all just subjective.
Dreams not worth dying for...

I like well dressed avatars to ones with expensive items on it.

Mine have a tendency to be both since I have a lot of EIs and own 2 or 3 of them.

... Aren't worth living for.

I don't care if someones avatar is expensive or cheap, I love to see creativity.
If you can manage to make the Lidless Demon Armor set look creative and not cluttery, then I'll probably like it.

Although there are times where I just throw all my expensive stuff on after I finish a quest. D:
But for the most part, I just like my avatar to match / look good. heart

Seriously, this just seems like an attempt to validate/vindicate one's personal taste/aesthetics over someone else's, when it's all just subjective.

I'm not trying to do that at all, I'm sorry if it looks like that, I'm just comparing avatar types and seeing others preferences. Sorry I offended you.
