Well, the plot did give me a gut feeling of "The Count of Monte Cristo" -- although that didn't involve a king at all. And that took place in 19th century France. (Or future sci fi France with crazy screentones if you're going by the anime version!)

They're not actual characters, so don't worry about that rofl (Sometimes there are random really weird aliens in the backgrounds of scenes for no real reason other than because they wanted to put weird aliens in, I think.)

The series was on Crunchyroll for free, not sure if it still is.
