I've had a few fans spoil something I was moderately enjoying to the point I could no longer enjoy it they way that I had in the beginning. I liked Naruto at first but then it was everywhere that I looked and I had grown tired of it then ultimately became indifferent towards it.

In one case I actually introduced a friend to a show that I enjoyed that he had never watched before, a month later he has turned into an uber-fan telling me things that I had already told him and more. And when I bring it up or say how the writing isn't as good as before I get labeled a hipster and am shunned for opening my mouth to speak in the negative.

I admit that I hate it when people become a fan of something or hate on something that they haven't even seen or read based upon the opinions of others.

As for the event I was a touch disappointed. When we do a Sherlock Holmes event I would expect that we would be getting something in relevance to the original Sherlock Holmes from the novels, not the BBC show. Perhaps I'm too much of a purest that I wasn't expecting the pop culture reference although this being Gaia I really should have seen that coming.

I don't hate on anyone's fandom. I do worry when it becomes an obsession that I fear that they are losing their identity to it. You know what I mean. Say for instance someone you know gets into the anime thing and the Japanese culture that they start acting, dressing, and doing things to imitate the people of that culture, hell they even strive to live there. But sadly they are only imitating the culture based on what they see in anime and j-dramas that they don't see the whole picture and end up having misconceptions and their actions can come off as ignorant and stereotyping.

As for the slash stuff, I don't mind it but it pisses me off when it's based on such stupid circumstances and logic. 'Oh they are always mistaken for a couple!' Such bull, going by that logic that means if you walked around with your sibling or cousin a lot and people mistook you as a couple despite any feelings that you do or don't have for each other you should engage in incest.

'Oh they hate each other! Pair up!'
'Oh he teased him about liking someone else, he must be jealous pair up!'
'He has wife and kids, he's straight, but he'd look good with that guy, pair up!' <- this example is real happened in the thankfully short lived animated show Allen Gregory. The only thing I liked about it was that it shows what happens when you force that type of slash on a person. It's painful and saddening to watch.

This is why I hated the idea of this months RIG. We shouldn't be encouraging this kind of behavior.

But actually the fans have really turned me off of a lot of things. SAO, naruto, TTGL (which I watched a year later and instantly fell in love with), sherlock (actually due to reaper), homestuck, ext. If we could just get all these assholes in a concentration camp with no access to the internet, then we can eliminate insanity from the general gene pool.

Greedy Lover

Aside from the hat and Nice Suit for Work, since when has Gaia has been flooded with Sherlock items?

You know fans is the reason the author of Brokeback Mountain now hates it.

They sent her so much fanfiction, porn, and more on how to make her work "better" so the two can bang more illicitly and live happily ever after.

Another thing that fans turned off for me was Grim Tales (and also all of the underage art on Bleedman's DA made me uncomfortable). Whenever I saw anything else that had to do with the characters that he used from the shows there was always a fan going how GT is better or how they need to bring it back but like GT.

There was this one bit from a comic or manga that someone had shown me on how to get back at the fangirls who does yaoi slash stuff a lot. Lock them in a convention room and show them what it looks like when real gay men go at it, none of that bishy stuff, real sweaty out of shape middle aged guys.

But luckily what was mentioned before it true. Fans usually move on to something else leaving only the hardcore ones, the thing they geek over will eventually end, or the people who creates/writes for them gets a big head and ends up ticking off their friends.

Stellar Succubus

I dunno, I don't let crazy fandoms dictate whether I'll like or dislike something.

Yep, Sherlock and Homestuck both have crazy fandoms. I still really enjoy them both.

I guess, if anything, the craze of things on Gaia has led me to some stuff I wouldn't have found otherwise. Like Homestuck, and chocolate skittles :3

I do think the whole brony thing is weird. My Little Pony was something I watched as a little kid. And in my mind it belongs when I was five.

Kind of makes you understand why Rowling killed off half of the characters in HP. emotion_facepalm

Where does this insanity come from?? Is the tv telling young girls to obsess over fictional characters and degrade the characters?? Is the level of estrogen in milk so high that it's causing issues in the female brain??

rofl But I love that idea of showing gay porn. "Is this what you wanted to see?!?" "Stare at your favorite characters bang each other for reals!!"

While that's true, I kind of still am a fan of everything I've ever been a fan of. Sure I don't display it on my shoulder, but if someone asked me if I liked the original Dragon Ball I'd still say yes especially now that I've grown up from originally watching it in my youth to understand the parodies and jokes it was trying to make even if I don't particularly want to imagine young Goku and Krillin getting it on somewhere. sweatdrop

I can never get tired of free stuff, no matter where it's from. xD

I do get tired of things having the same theme like feminine EIs always having frilly things or a super obvious man-woman MC combo... I love girly things but I don't mind being unisex so now and then, y'know?

Guys can be just as guilty. The My Little Pony: FIM fanbase is a perfect example. It's not a single gender thing.

These kind of fans are quite annoying but sadly unavoidable. They cross the borders of enjoyment and become obsessed.

I remember when Gaia had up that MLP Subforum for a while. . That was actually nice. Most of Gaia was obsessed with MLP for a little while. Then there was Homestuck, and I don't mind Homestuck. . . I just wish some of the people in that Fandom- Or any Fandom for that matter- wouldn't act like it's the BEST ******** thing on this planet, y'know?- Like, don't be so aggressive about it.

I can't tell you how many times I've come across a die hard Twilight fan, and got screamed at for saying "It's not my cup of tea".
"NOT YOUR CUP OF TEA?!- YOU'RE A DISGRACE TO HUMANITY!!! TWILIGHT IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THAT DRACULA s**t!!! YOU'RE NOT HUMAN!!! BAAAAWWWWW!!!!!"
". . . . I'm going to go buy myself some coffee now."

I think that Gaia's new obsession should be something that people aren't going to kill each other over. [/Knows that that isn't really going to happen, but is going to remain positive about it anyway.]

Greedy Capitalist

Is it bad that I get tired of seeing the same threads pop up in the GCD every other time I visit (you know the ones from the GCD bingo card)

Fandoms don't bother me that much, I'm kinda lucky that I can pretty much avoid them without even trying.

All I've seen of this "huge event" were a few cryptic staff alerts, some new hats at H&R Wesley, and a whole lot of whinging in the GCD. Just show me the grant link already, now that it's been decrypted.

As for my views on slash and on fandom in general, I'd rather not go into them right now. Suffice to say that I have nothing but utter contempt for both.

High-functioning Unicorn

fandom or not,, it's the free items that count! If you don't like the item just throw it away!, Besides, a fandom event give us things to do for a while biggrin

and if you think that it isn't fair for because a certain fandom get some vents every once in a while, then face it,, life isn't fair biggrin

I really really hate that show and everything it represents
and it wasn't just a single item with a fun set of riddles no, this was a s**t ton of items and an entire RIG dedicated to the crap show.

if I never see another adventure time item released it would be too soon.

I freely admit that I enjoy Adventure Time those whole concept that it's the world after a war and all of the people you see are something like mutants makes me laugh at the uniqueness.

But I won't get on your case for hating something that I enjoy, I just want to know what made you really really hate it and everything that it represents?

Was it the fans? The sudden over exposure? Or was it something else? I only ask because for someone to say that they hate it that much there has to be some reason behind it.

____________
I just thought of another thing or rather a person who I dislike now because of others and certain events.

I can't stand Rihanna.

I didn't care for her music but that was okay for me, I didn't like so I didn't listen as simple as that. But then came the whole Chris Brown thing and how it was handled afterwards. Now we never heard anything from him sure and people will say it's not right to hit a woman. I say that's a bit up in the air, if you have a woman being annoying as hell to you and doing things and even putting her hands on you I will not blame you for snapping and hitting her once. But that beat down...no that wasn't right.

Anyhow the way things came after that, how the story was all over the news, how they said she should become a spokesperson against abuse. Again I need to reiterate that part, they wanted her to become a spokesperson against abuse. She went on Oprah and to some she became this great strong young woman who others felt was a role model, whom look up to because she got out of an abusive relationship.

What happens? She goes back to him and made a song about it, so she reverse Taylor Swifted. So now all of those women who saw her as an idol and someone to look up to because of what she went through are either let down or given the impression it's okay to go back to the abuse.

Now I don't hate her for doing what she's done, but I can't stand her now because of that over exposure or how everyone else placed that upon her even though she didn't want it.
