There are two factors you have to take into consideration here. First, the number of teens who end their lives or lash out with violent retaliation because of bullying both off and on line is on the rise. Sites like Gaia are being held responsible for allowing such an atmosphere to foster and grow and legally they could face lawsuits for not taking action to stop such behavior. So a lot of the rules put in place in places like the Lifestyle Discussion and Life Issues forums are there in order to help protect Gaia as a site along with the people who post there.

Then, you have a generation of kids growing up being told that everyone is exactly the same and no one is ever better than you. They're being given ribbons for showing up and never told to go for the win. They're told no one is smarter because there's no such thing as the advanced track in school anymore as many schools are dumbing down our kids and removing the honors track. They're given full credit for partial work and getting passed on even though they don't fully understand things because they're told there's no right or wrong anymore and no winners or losers. Society is telling them that the moment someone says something they don't like hearing or bothers them whether it was intentional (be it criticism or true hateful speech) or not (accidentally wording something the wrong way) that person is mean and cruel and they should immediately run off to a grown up because people who say no or disagree are bullies. They're also told that people who say anything negative about someone who gets the slightest bit of recognition from ANYONE is jealous of them and that's why they can't instantly give them praise. It's a generation of children being forced into an overly PC society and they don't know how to compete in society anymore because they're over-coddled and turned into adults who can't take the slightest bit of negative criticism and rejection.

When you put the two together you come up with a society of children who can't handle an online world where it's hard to tell if someone is serious or goofing around and sites that don't want to be sued if one of their members ends up retaliating in violence or taking their lives. In the end, the greater membership suffers out of the protection of the socially repressed few today's society has created.

Honestly I see that kind of thing more on tumblr than anywhere else, which is funny because you can basically get away with anything short of child porn on that website, making it sort of a bizarro 4chan. The *amount* of screaming that happens if you tell a joke or disagree with someone on that website.

It's unfortunate if that's spread to Gaia, which actually *does* have a working system of consequences, sort-of. There is nothing on this planet that I hate more than censorship. I do not believe that I should have to temper my language in order to avoid hurting the feelings of a total stranger on the internet. I barely temper my language to avoid hurting the feelings of people I actually know and like IRL, and somehow people online think this is, like, a right? ******** you, go away. I hope people who are that buttsensitive ignore me.

i kinda overlook that a**hole nature in people b/c it's not worth getting upset about. When you have a mother like mine, it's harder to be hurt by strangers. I kinda say whatever and then realize that I might've been too harsh.

I'd also like to add that kids aren't being taught how to fail and get back up. We're protecting them from so much. Playgrounds have changed so much just to prevent injuries. There's so many things that kids aren't learning and it's really causing our society to suffer.

:> You bring up an interesting point. My family's always been made up of piss-takers and assholes. So going into an environment where not everybody grew up needing a thick hide I tend not to notice when I'm upsetting someone until I already have, and then I tend not to feel that bad about it because I grew up dealing with worse.

just today i really wanted to put someone on my ignore list because every time their avatar loaded on a forum page it made my laptop heat up, and ignore listing would hide their avatar. LOL. instead i just opted to disable forum animations. but i reallllly wanted to put them on ignore - simply because a specific animated item they used was giving me lag. xd

Not mine, is it?
... thought I should check, since I do kick a** and flit wings. > n>

it's really bad when your mother makes it a point to put you down in front of others and ruins your first impression on someone who you wanted to impress. I grew up with everybody putting me down, i don't actually expect strangers to be nice to me.

nah animated wings are fine. it's just 1 specific Animated background item that gives me lag. fortunately not a lot of people use it much, probably because it also gives them lag. lol

The depressingest thing is this is actually a pretty good survival tactic :V hooray pessimism?

I mostly just expect people to be annoyed by me, so it's a pleasant surprise when they're actually charmed by my roguish nature. I feel like saying what you mean gets you the *right* kind of friends, but not as many of them.

The rules haven't changed. The difference is that more people may be reporting certain crossing the line behavior. Name calling and putting down has never been allowed on Gaia but it really depends on if the user you do it to is going to report or if a mod just happens by.

On-topic: I agree and don't.

Basically? If you just happen to not like someone's opinion, well, you can go blow that out your a** because it ain't license to be a cockbreath.

HOWEVER-
Nobody has ANY excuse or reason OR right to attack another person on the Internet. I'm not talking discussion during which one party gets analmad because they're not getting their way, I'm talking straight-out personal attacks. That is the sort of thing I dickpunch.
