Oh I love the Reve I had to read all the theories
I love the idea of a coin operated boy male doll companion for mademoiselle

and pepper did say there would be another person in the story, if I'm correct

I don't feel like I can make a better theory then the ones others have wrote gonk

But I will be happy if there is romance and death
I love stories where lovers die at the end

Well, the daruma crab only has one eye filled in, so I'm thinking that a wish has been made that is not yet fulfilled, and might not be, considering there is supposed to be a tragedy going on here. I believe someone else noticed the Mademoiselle in the drawings had pin hinges at her joints and I believe Pepper-Tea vouched for this. I don't know whether to take that as an indication that she may also be a doll or whether this is present because of the shadow play we are watching. The shadow play in the art I do believe to be something that we are viewing from inside the crab, as per the description. Seeing that the lady is giving all of her toys hearts in the most recent illustration, I'm taking that as some kind of wish for her toys to have life or love, as some others have supposed.

She's a toymaker who lives alone along the rocky shores of France. All she knows is how to make toys and that's how she spends her days...she finds her materials along the beaches and under the water. Each toy is important to her, so much so that she puts her heart into them. A little bit of herself. She has no one else, so they are her only friends.

The style itself reminds me of the European styled Japanese art work that became popular once Japanese culture was introduced to Europe. I forget what it was called but...yeah. Plus there is that shadow puppet motif as well which is also Asian-inspired.

I dunno, I'm not really good at guessing these kinds of things. The character just seems like a lonely girl who has nothing but the toys she makes.

From what I can see...
A girl who makes toys, and goes out of her way to find the very things she's going to use to make them.

Maybe gets caught in a dream land of sorts because of it?

That... is actually REALLY plausible right there, if not outright possible!
A common case of "I just want friends" but a tragic one nonetheless.

What WAS the Mademoiselle doing under the sea, though, pearl diving? Or, were the pearls going to be shaped into hearts?
