I think, Like everyone else, That shes a toymaker. Finding her pieces at the bottom of the ocean.

She is on a quest to make the perfect toy -perhaps for a lover- But fails.
As for the mask, she could have made it for herself, wanting to give it to who ever at a fancy ball or party?
Then the toy goes utterly mad and murders her and her lover?

I think the mask is really suppose to resemble a scuba-diver's mask.
Since the toymaker dived in the ocean, it kinda does makes sense if you think about it. It does to me, anyway. XD

I like the puppet idea. ANd she goes on the road with her act and joins a circus. Maybe later she'll be making life size puppets and dolls and as someone else had mention fall in love with her creation. But being that it's just a lifeless "toy" there is no hope for their love.

Miraculously, they come to life and this gives her an idea; she makes herself a lifesize man toy to try and relieve her loneliness. She builds him but he rejects her and runs off and, broken-hearted, Mademoiselle jumps into the ocean and apparently drowns.

I like that idea. The "rusty dream" makes me think of a mechanical toy crying and rusting from the inside. Maybe Peppertea is a fan of Kroenen, the clockwork assassin from "Hellboy." Either she puts the broken body of her dead lover in the clockwork form or maybe she builds a mechanical man but the government takes it and makes it into an assassin. twisted

In the second picture, she looks like she fetched a heart from the ocean to give it to the toy shark to capture its true feeling...?

Wow, the pictures remind me of chinese shadow puppets.
I agree with the idea of her being an toymaker or some kind of inventor.
When it first came out I had a theory about it being revolved around a tragic tale of a man in the circus and his lady love.

Now I think Mademoiselle is young woman who lives by the sea looking for parts in the sea to make new gadgets/toys/, when she makes a new toy she goes to visit someone she cares deeply for to show them.
Hoping that the joy they feel from her inventions will cure the ailment within their heart.
