Welcome to Gaia! ::

The nudity you are talking about, did you PM an online moderator about it with a descriptive subject? That is what you need to do in extreme cases like someone posting porn, gore, or giving out another's personal information.

Not only did i pm one moderator about the posted materials... 3 out of 6 moderators that were online at some point in time actually read my pm the other 3 never even read the pm. The subject i gave to th pm was "FYI: Extreme sexually explicit materials posted in the GD".
Eventually i contacted an admin who ignored my pm as well. The only one responding was Tuba Toothpaste and she removed the explicit stuff about 23 hours after the first response.

That is unacceptable!!!!!

If your internet software classifies Gaia incorrectly that's hardly Gaia's fault. Kids SHOULDN'T be on this site. They aren't even allowed to be on this site. And we can use the words "sex" and "p***s" if we want to.

This website is supposed to be aimed at teens--that is, ages 13 through 19. Your observation would be news to Lanzer (Derek Liu), the founder of Gaia, who stated in an interview, ". . . almost all our audiences are within the 14 to 25 year old age range."

An overactive minority of adults on Gaia amuse themselves like flashers in front of schoolyards and in libraries, waiting for some kid to walk by just so that they can open their raincoats and flash their privates.
i cannot believe i laughed at that, and how does lanzer know this i mean really we dont scan our real ID's to sign into gaia when registering

I like to respond to that with a quote from Lanzer's interview with big-boards.com.

We've recently hosted a poll which told us almost all our audiences are within the 14 to 25 year old age range.

I guess that clarifies a lot... wouldn't you agree?

You are right... you can report/block certain people on gaia... but .... Gaia, which later became Gaiaonline created a site that according to their Information for Parents page is PG-13. That comes with responsibilities. And gaiaonline claims to do its best... however given the amount of explicit materials being posted in both the CB as well as the GD in recent times, there can only be one conclusion. The statement in the Information for Parents is a false/misleading/incorrect statement and should be corrected as soon as possible.

Many gaians are oblivious to the fact that such practices occur. However, no nudity should appear on a PG-13 website anyways. Those few, and we are talking about a small percentage of, gaians who intentionally violate the R&G and ToS should find themselves another site on the internet to get the attention they crave for. They should not be posting this filth on gaiaonline. Let's try to make this site "|safe for anyone of the age of 13 and over" again.

Great response I appreciate a proper one xd

However you've fallen into the trap that many don't realize when criticising any organisation is that they don't have the resources or man(Or women) power to maintain a constant vigilance over such issues and well...........................................this is the internet there will always be those creating chaos.

Gaia has been this way for ten years and as the moderators have told me on numerous occasions they will not drive of any one groups of users scream despite many users protesting they do so.

Its up to us, each and every one of us to take personnel responsibility for our actions and help Gaia by using what is given to us.

We cannot kiddy safe the internet or Gaia. We can only help keep it safe.

Like many users I oppose the existence of the GD and applauded the changes to Rally (Now preventing many many many vulgar behaviors) , smalls steps have already been taken but we can only hope Gaia even bends to pressure and stops putting up with such behavior and finally dispose of the last few dreggy parts of this site.

So in my opinion gaiaonline should employ in-house site moderators that can be reached 24/7.

Gaia has always user-sourced it's Moderators, and not all Moderators can be everywhere at once.
These people have lives. Classes, families, and generally, alot of s**t to do, just like regular people.

Not only do Moderators regulate the content in the forums, but they also have to make sure that users within Rally and Towns are complying with the ToS.

Gaia does employ "in-house" staff (Admins) that also watch the forums, but the wish for them to be reached 24/7 is not viable, this would mean they would have to be in the office or on the site in their homes 24/7.

I love my job, but I am not going to sit at my computer all hours of the day to answer reports.
Note: I am NOT Gaia staff, I just work via my computer.

Next

Gaia always has and always will host content that is in the grey area of "PG-13"

Does "PG-13" constitute violence? Or sexual / implied sexual content?

This has always been an issue, and one that I plan to bring up at the Next "Ask the Admin"

I am an adult who reported her age honestly when opening an account with Gaia Online. As well, I state this openly on my profile. I would be inclined to question the motives of any adult on this site who chooses to do otherwise, particularly because the policy is openly advertised across the Internet as welcoming "anyone 13 years of age and older."

I do not believe Quibuz meant that all moderators should be on-call 24/7, rather that coverage by moderators should be done 24/7 and performed by paid moderators--no longer user-sourced (change can be a good thing):
-- They could work for 4- or 8-hour shifts, rather than between classes, while kids are sleeping, or after dinner is done.
-- As well, he is suggesting that the paid moderators personally monitor the forum threads--as well as Rally and Towns--rather than check out reports made by users to the moderators.

I, as well as others, have stumbled across numerous frontal male and female nude drops:
--In some cases they appeared to be frontal n***s of male and female teens (a U.S. federal violation).
--In other cases, they were graphic drops of unconscious or dead women, one being raped (again posing legal problems).
--Often the offensive threads were in place for several hours to days with at least 3 pages of spectators acting like a crowd cheering a jumper.

Threads such as those and the slow response to them precipitate the queries in this thread:
-- I have reported the sexually explicit and graphically inappropriate content in these threads to mods. -- And, I've watched for over 24 hours, waiting to see when a mod would get around to removing the threads.
-- The extreme number of threads soliciting to all (that is, teens as well as adults) for PMs with n***s in exchange for Gaia gold (something unfortunately tempting to young teens) would be laughable--if it, too, were not a federal offense.

Gaia Online is advertised as PG-13 and targets teens; which means that teens, as well as adults, frequent this site:
-- There is no way to block teen access to threads in the Forums, so Gaia Online should clean up the Forums, demonstrating concern equal to or greater than that for Rally and Towns.
-- Gaia Online would be advised to take federal, that is U.S. laws, seriously.

I enjoy Gaia Online and would prefer to see it continue for teens as well as adults, and not degenerate into a site soliciting Adult X-Rated content. Worse still, I can actually imagine discovering that I could no longer access my account because Gaia Online had been closed down by someone with ample screenshots of kiddie porn on Gaia who decided to complain to any of the myriad federal reporting websites. I am quite concerned about all of this because I actually DO want Gaia Online to continue.

I know the reason for the the minimum age restriction of 13--to adhere to a United States federal law predating the inception of Gaia Online: the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA). And I understand the rationale for it. Prior to Gaia Online's age restriction, the website risked violation of COPPA and the penalties that would accompany such violation.

I also know how painful the age ban is. A few years ago, I had to cope with it when my then 13-year-old son received a 2-year ban on his account by foolishly attempting to discourage a 17-year-old's messages by claiming to be 11.
