Hey, I'm not arguing that there aren't nearly enough mods. But the reason they aren't proactive isn't because it's policy or anything, it's just because there aren't enough of them to cover everything.

no offence, but... That IS because of gaiaonline's policy. They should employ moderators instead of recruiting volunteers. It is gaia policy to have a certain amount of moderators per forum category.

Back in 2007 there were nude drops too, however they appeared far less frequent. Nowadays you can find at least 10 topics with the words Nude and Drop in it per day. Curiocity makes people visit those threads. And some (not all) contain sexually explicit or even pornographic materials.

I know that the CB and GD were created to discuss things, but i fail to see why pictures of genitalia contribute to such a discussion and what educational value it has for younger teens. Also the descriptive content where no pictures are used, but the description could have been taken out of some sleezy adult magazine (you know the ones nobody ever reads wink ) Topics about masturbation should exist only if they have an educational value. But i fail to see what more than 500 topic titles containing "jacking off" contribute to that educational value.

Furthermore... i believe that sexual education is one of the responsibilities for the parents, not for a website that claims to uphold a PG-13 rating.

I think one of the big problems is that the moderators ARE volunteers--they are unpaid, receiving only a nominal sum of Gc or Gg each month. Employ the moderators (pay them in US currency) and maybe the job would be more thoroughly and rapidly done.

Moreover.... if some teenager under the age of 18 would post his/her naked body on the forums, gaiaonline can be sued for spreading childporn on its site.

They don't get GC or Gold at all. They get nothing.

if Gaia paid their moderators they'd be able to afford FEWER mods, not more.

But seriously I dunno why you guys are arguing when I'm agreeing that we need more mods sweatdrop

Despite the wording of the Information for Parents page, we do not claim to PG-13 as defined by the MPAA and officially dropped our use of the phrase "PG-13" years ago. We aim to keep the site appropriate for use by people age 13 and older, but claiming that we're "PG-13" is misleading because of the MPAA connotations.

Thank you, you just supported my point. The text on the Information for Parents page is misleading and apparently incorrect; therefore should be changed.

Is Gaia appropriate for teens?

We try to keep our site at a "PG-13" level, and a dedicated staff of moderators constantly monitors the forums to remove abusive or racist language, inappropriate images and adult content.

should be something like:

That shouldn't take that much effort and it would end this discussion. wink

FYI... there is just one PG-13 rating which has been set by the MPAA. Claiming that your site complies to these ratings indicaties and implies that you uphold saId rating levels.

It's my understanding that there are legal reasons why we can't simply change that page on a whim.

We do not claim to uphold the MPAA's PG-13 rating. Colloquially, PG-13 can be used to simply mean "Safe for people 13 and older". However, like I said, we no long use that term because of the MPAA connotation.

As a systems engineer with several IT related degrees and more than 15 years of experience, I can tell you that there are no legal reasons that prevent you from chanceing a faulty statement in your advise to parents. As a matter of fact... i would think that such a mistake should be corrected as soon as possible to prevent possible legal ramifications. But i could ask my former colleagues from the law firm where i was the IT manager for their opinions.

About the PG-13 rating: you are so misinformed that it makes me laugh and cry at the same time. For your information: MPAA's PG-13 rating is the ONLY accepted, standard definition of the PG-13 rating in existence... as i stated in one of my previous posts in this thead, PG-13 is a trademark used for a movie rating indicating that admission will be granted to persons of all ages but that parental guidance is suggested in the case of children under the age of 13. I also confirmed that this rating has been ported to websites and games. But with the same conditions. Now if you are going to contradict that, you better have proof of concept that has generally been accepted as such. Since you can't provide such proof, basically since it doesn't exist, your reply reeks of trolling.

while yes, they could get sued-- CP is CP if its a picture in sexual context/intent.
A naked child isnt CP
A child with panties on, legs spread in a pin-up pose is CP.

eventhough this isn't fully on topic, i like to respond nonetheless. You mention that a naked child is not childporn. However.... In my opinion Childporn is any graphic material that depicts the body of a naked underaged person in a suggestive way. Now this is open to the interpretation of the viewer. However... Posting images of certain bodyparts and genitalia has no esthetic or artistic value whatsoever. And those kind of posts were either made or requested a lot recently in the Chatterbox and the General Discussion. I believe that the current bans those people got (varying from 2 weeks till 6 months) are not sufficient. And that legal steps should be taken against those violators. Legal steps from gaia's side would be to inform local legislation with all the evidence needed for the procecution to build a case. Now you may question whether this should be enforced on teens. It came to my attention that many repeating violators are older than 20 and use different accounts or so called mule accounts to request or spead such sexually explicit materials. They should definitly be dealt with in a juridical way, as they clearly don't see that such materials can harm young teens. And this site's main target audience is teens from the ages 13 and up.

The site's main target audience is not as young as you think it is. I said that already but you didn't pay attention. Also I have no idea what "juridical' means.

Thats not an opinion, thats a fact. CP is a naked child/or a child posed in a suggestive way

Depends. Ive seen some artistic vulvas. Of course the models were in their 20s+, its possible to have genitalia on its own as an artistic image. KIDS genitalia, thats different

Do you always edit your opinion into other people's quotes as if that's what they said?? for that could lead to misinformation, misinterpretation and unclarities. Your additions made in bold font do not necessarily reflect mine. For instance... I disagree with you on both

as the first one definitely is my opinion and can't be stated as a fact and the latter one is irrelevant since a site for young teens shouldn't contain graphic nudity. There are many other sites on the internet that would satisfy those in need for such materials. Gaiaonline should not be one of them.
