Added to all of this, is of course the items on this site. The favorite examples would be the alcohol, smoking, and the weapons
Kids still know about these, go to a middle school and kids constantly talk about these things so why act like they don't exist?

Another example would be the fact that we have support groups for things like BDSM. Something that you have to be at least 18 to even participate in. That's five years over the age set by Gaia.
There is no maximum age though. Many users on this site are over 18 and discriminating against them by saying they can only post things that 13 year olds would know would lose them about 40% of the gaia population.

For example, in Zodiacal we have an item that removes the bra and only the hair covers the boobs. Because that's totally appropriate for someone that's 13 years old.
This is so dumb that I don't even know how to describe how dumb this is.

Yanno I was going to talk about Gaia being a PG-13 site, but nowhere does it say that. As long what you do isn't sexually explicit you're good to go on the sexual side of things.

Instead of asking the question, should we ban anyone under 18 because of the content people have been known to talk about on this website, allow me to pose a few far more interesting questions.

Why is it a bad thing to talk to teenagers about things that they will be encountering in their lives sooner rather than later, and in fact likely live in a society where they already have on a daily basis? Why is it so necessary to hide away discussion of things like sex and pregnancy where teenagers can't participate in it, like it's some sort of frightening contagion? Why is there still this sort of default philosophy that when talking to kids you're supposed to act like perfectly normal aspects of adult life are terrifying, sinful, awful things?

Do you think that this attitude of coddling and hiding away certain aspects of adulthood from teenagers is actually conducive to healthy emotional and mental development?

Do you honestly think there's really that huge of a gap between the emotional maturity of a 13-year-old and a 17-year-old?

This. I hate it when people act like teenagers are sooper dooper innocent and don't know about these things until they're 18. I also want to add, I don't think we should treat the site as if EVERYONE is 13. There's nothing inappropriate about a pregnancy support thread. This site is for people 13 and UP, so, pregnancy is something people will deal with.

No, just no.

This is the internet.

If they don't find inappropriate things here, then they'll just go somewhere else for it.

Hello there!

Huh? I see the need for pregnancy support threads because teen mothers are more common than ever before. I see the need for a lot of "alternative lifestyle" support communities. But BSDM support threads? That is relation to sex, I'm not sure if this technically appropriate for a website like Gaia. Let me ask you this: do you want a bestiality support thread or guild?

have a nice day

Do you realize how broad of a comparison this is? PG-13 does not mean no sex at all, look at a single PG-13 movie. Things like BDSM can be discussed without any actual recounting of sexual activity. And let's face it, more and more Gaians are over the age of thirteen these days. Most of those I know are full blown adults.

Stellar Succubus

I am mother to an 11 year old. I maintain vigilance whilst he is online, and when he comes across something he does not understand, we talk about it.

He is old enough to know about sex. I worry more about gore trolls on here when he is 13 and old enough to join.

I think it's just important to keep dialogue open with kids about all these things. If we don't, they stumble across stuff when they're older and can't respond to it in a mature way.

I believe 13 is old enough to see most of the topics on here that are legitimate. No one needs to talk about their sex life in great detail on Gaia. Just take it elsewhere... arrange a discussion on a forum outside of Gaia. I know that solution doesn't suit some people, but it's just not necessary. Gaia is not the only place to seek help on the internet.

The items, I have no issue with. Once we instill the belief that these things are taboo (bare chest) they become so.

I've been watching worlds strictest parents and preachers daughters and between the two, I think they answer those questions fairly well. The conservative parents (usually the ones that scream the loudest) seem to be under the impression that if a teen learns about all the terrifying, sinful, awful adult things, then the teen is going to go out and try what ever it is. So the idea is to then make them cover up at all times, stalk the kid, and be just as overbearing as possible to ensure none of this ever reaches their kids ears. Girls seem to get it worse than the boys.

Honestly, those parents more than likely don't let their kid on Gaia if they knew what was on the site. So really it isn't that big of a deal that we have these threads/guilds/what have you.

Which is ridiculous faulty logic that would get you thrown out of a debate class on your ear, and why would you even want to bring up a topic like this when the main defense of it is terrible parenting and hysteria.

If BDSM support threads are not allowed, then neither are Gay or Bisexual support threads. Since sexuality is all about who one chooses to do those over PG13 things with.

If you can't tell, I'm being facetious.

BDSM isn't always in relation to that. In fact, it can be completely without it.

And besides... if there is no discussing acts, then I see no harm in those threads. If they're just a place for people with a shared interest to discuss their lifestyle.

SO LONG as it's kept clean, there is no harm, IMO.

Its legit what happens on those shows though. One girl found out that her sister had sex before marriage and started crying because she now believes that she's going to have sex before marriage because her big sister role model did.

It doesn't make any since and I'm sure most of it is for television drama but I did grow up with a friend that would tell me about all the times I was going to hell and eventually lost contact because she felt that me having boyfriends and going to parties was a bad influence on her. Even though I never pressured her into going and tried to respect her insane boundaries. I'm pretty sure I won't ever be able to be around her should I somehow get invited to a baby shower or w/e. I got invited to her wedding but I didn't feel like being ridiculed that day.

Back on topic, I'm sure there are parents out there that would happily block Gaia. Its probably just rare.

There is a massive gap in emotional maturity between a 13 and a 17 year old. What child psychologists have you been reading that suggest otherwise?!

But more importantly, everyone is different. Age is only one factor.

In general though, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

...More just a personal observation extrapolated from the silliness I see everyone in that age range post on the internet. They might be awfully different on the inside, but the dumb s**t they post isn't. :V

But it's very true, age isn't the sole determining factor at all. I know a distressing amount of chronological adults that prove this...

I think it should be normal to speak/type inn front of these children about sex, not kinks or what you did in the bedroom last night, just what sex is and what it entails and how to be safe. The problem?

I don't think there is a difference in emotional maturity between a 13 year old and a 17 year old. I know there is a difference.

I'm glad you saw this. I accidentally deleted my post, I think.

I see what your'e saying, I do agree in terms of behaviour. I do know there were things I could not process at age 13 compared to 17 that people might be exposed to here. But as I've said, everyone's different. I've met some incredibly mature 13 year olds on this site.

There are people who think that lizard-people from outer space have a shadow government within our government and are controlling our politicians, too. Doesn't mean we should pander to them.

And, see, that's the thing- blocking Gaia if you think it's bad for your kid is both your right and your responsibility as a parent. Gaia shouldn't have to censor itself because parents don't want to do their primary goddamn job.

And you have to admit that Gaia does pander a bit to the cat worshipers just a tiny little bit.

And I can't come up with anymore counter arguments right now so enjoy the tip. xd
